The song was taken from The Grid’s third Album Evolver which reached number 14 on the UK Albums chart. The Album has a hidden track of a message left on an answering machine.
The duo behind The Grid was David Ball and Richard Norris. David was studying art at Leeds Polytechnic in the UK. It was there that he met Marc Almond and in 1979 they set up Soft Cell, the duo had a hit in 1981 with a cover of the Gloria Jones ( girlfriend of Marc Bolan from T.Rex ) 1964 song ” Tainted love “.
Richard is a London-based record producer, sound engineer and musician. He used to be a writer for music magazine NME in the mid eighties before forming The Grid with David.
” Swamp thing ” is mostly instrumental, the track consists of drums, synthesiser sounds and the now famous banjo. The banjo was expertly played by folk musician Roger Dinsdale.
Roger was an expert musician who along with his skill with the banjo also played the guitar ( electric and acoustic ), tin whistle and mandolin. Roger played in two Irish pub bands, Sacred Cow and Pigtown Fling.
It was while Roger was playing with Pigtown Fling in a pub that his talent was spotted by a producer, he was asked to play some banjo parts as a session musician, it turned out to be the now famous ” Swamp thing ” banjo riff, which he composed. He toured with The Grid and appeared twice on the BBC tv music show Top Of The Pops.
It was alleged that Richard was only paid £30,000 for his part in the hit single, he took his own life in July 2009.
The song was a commercial success for The Grid. In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK chart on the 4th of June 1994 and reached a peak of number 3. It spent 8 weeks in the top ten and a total of 17 weeks on the UK chart.
The song reached the top five in many countries throughout Europe, it also reached number 3 in Australia but only managed number 41 in New Zealand.
