Take me to Church Hozier
Song Title: Take me to Church
Date of release: 13 September 2013
Description: ” Take me to Church ” is by Hozier ( Andrew Hozier-Byrne ), the Irish musician. Written by Hozier, the song is his first single from his debut Album ” Hozier “.
Hozier was a struggling musician when he wrote and recorded the song in the attic of the home of his parents in County Wicklow, Ireland.
He came to the attention on the independent record label Rubyworks and record producer Rob Kirwan, who has worked with U2 and Depeche Mode.
Rob set about overdubbing the original demo track from Hozier with live instruments. Two musicians feature on the track, Hozier himself and drummer Fiachra Kinder.
The song explores his frustration with the Catholic Church and his own thoughts on homosexuality. In a Rolling Stone interview Hozier said ” The history speaks for itself and I grew incredibly frustrated and angry. I essentially just put that into my words “.
As a debut single, ” Take me to Church ” proved to be a good choice as the first release. The song was first to find success in Hozier’s native Ireland.
There the song entered IRMA Chart ( Irish Recorded Music Association ) and climbed to number 2, giving Hozier his first taste of success with the song.
In the United States more success was to follow after Hozier performed the song on the Late Show with David Letterman. The song entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and moved steadily up to reach number 2 for three consecutive weeks.
Sales figures for the song in the US stand at 4,270,000 copies as of July 2015.
Along with success in Ireland and the US, Hozier has also found success in Australia, Canada and New Zealand where it reached number 2.
In the United Kingdom, ” Take me to Church ” entered the UK Chart and climbed to reach number 2. The song spent 15 weeks in the top ten and a total of 76 on the chart.
