The song was originally called ” Soleado “, a composition by the Italian musician and composer Zacar or Ciro Dammicco as he is more widely known.
Various artists have sung the song with lyrics as opposed to the original which didn’t have any words, the most famous non English version is by Michael Holm ( Lothar Walter ) the German singer and songwriter in 1974. His was to be the first to have lyrics, known as Tränen lügen nicht, which literally means ” Tears don’t lie “.
The Michael Holm version was a hit in 1974, he scored a number one in Germany and reached the top ten in both Austria and Switzerland.
For those that think the song sounds familiar, think of Johnny Mathis who had a huge Christmas hit in 1976 with ” When a child is born “.
” Tears don’t lie ” was released by the PolyGram record label in 1994 and taken as the third single from his first Album ” Never Stop That Feeling “.
Mark ‘Oh enjoyed huge success with the song across Europe, in Germany the song reached number one and spent a total of 22 weeks on the chart.
Sweden also saw Mark reach the top slot, there he stayed on the Sverigetopplistan chart for 15 weeks.
Austria was also a success for ” Tears don’t lie ” with a number 3 peak, there the song stayed on the chart for a total of 16 weeks.
In the Netherlands the song reached number 2 and spent a total of 11 weeks on the chart.
In the United Kingdom, ” Tears don’t lie ” entered the UK chart and reached number 24, the song stayed in the top 40 for 2 weeks and a total of 3 weeks on the chart.
