” Telephone Man ” is by Meri Wilson ( Meri Wilson Edgmon ), who was a singer-songwriter and model.
She was born on the 15th of June 1949 in Nagoya, Japan, but raised in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia, United States.
Her father was a trumpet player and her mother a piano teacher. When she was two years old, Meri started singing, learning to play the piano, cello and later the flute and guitar.
Her break came when she was singing jingles in the studio during the late 70s. It was there she caught the attention of Jim Rutledge, the former vocalist of American rock group Bloodrock.
He introduced her to music producer, inventor and record label owner Owen ‘ Boomer ‘ Castleman. He signed her to BNA Records, which is now part of BMG Music. Meri Wilson died at the age of 53 in 2002 after her car crashed during an ice storm.

It was produced by Boomer Castleman. The award-winning Texas-born producer, songwriter and musician was born on the 18th of July 1945 and died on the 1st of September 2015.
As a musician, he worked with the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Kenny Rodgers, George Hamilton, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Johnny Paycheck and Patti Page.
As a songwriter, he wrote for a wide range of recording artists including Lyle Lovett, John Dever and George Hamilton IV. In addition to Meri Wilson, Boomer Castleman worked as a producer for Bobby David, Kim Morrison, Ronnie Prophet and Mr Hyde.
Lyrically the novelty single is about a woman and her erotic encounters with her telephone technician. The song is made up entirely of suggestive lyrics and double entendres.
The song became a commercial success for Meri Wilson. In the United States, the single reached number eighteen on the 20th of August 1977 and spent sixteen weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) certified it Gold on the 26th of October 1977 for sales of 500,000 copies.
In the United Kingdom, ” Telephone Man ” entered the UK Singles chart on the 27th of August 1977 and peaked at number six. It spent five weeks in the Top Ten and ten weeks in the Top 100.
In New Zealand, the single peaked at number nine and spent twelve weeks on the chart there.
