Originally ” Tell it to my heart ” was intended for Madonna when Chappell Music staff songwriter Seth Swirsky and co-writer Ernie Gold first came up with the idea for the song, the demo nearly didn’t make it to the publisher after Seth and his girlfriend had doubts if the song was good enough.
Taylor had contacted Chappell Music looking for songs, she asked for demos that had been overlooked by other artists to be sent on to her. Although this song had already been recorded earlier in 1987 by Louisa Florio for her self-titled Album release in Canada, the demo was sent.
Before taking the stage name of Taylor Dayne, she had recorded using the name of Les Lee and had recorded two 12″ singles called ” I’m the one you want ” in 1985 and ” Tell me can you love me ” in 1986. Both songs were released on Mega Bolt, a New York based indie record label.
Producer Rik, who was working with her at the time heard the demo and instantly knew the song would be a hit. Taylor instantly knew the song was for her, she later recalled hearing the demo ” I thought there was something about the hook – it’s a happy hook “.
Taylor recorded ” Tell it to my heart ” at Cove City Sound Studios. The studio is set in a hamlet of Glen Cove, Long Island. The studio has played host to some of the biggest recording artists including, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion.
The song took off so quickly in the later part of 1987 that Taylor was forced to finish her debut Album at the studio in just six weeks.
Towards the end of the 80’s Taylor was nominated for Grammy Award in the Best Pop Vocal Performance Female category, but she lost out to Tracy Chapman and her song ” Fast car “. Taylor was also nominated for American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock New Artist.
