” The Christmas Canon ” is by Trans-Siberian Orchestra ( TSO ), the American progressive rock band. The band was formed in 1996 by New York City native composer, producer and lyricist Paul O’Neill. Along with Paul, the group are Jon Oliva, Al Pitrelli and Robert Kinkel.
The track was co-written by Paul O’Neill and Robert Kinkel with songwriting credit given to Pachelbel. Production was by Paul O’Neill and Robert Kinkel.
Released on the 15th of September 1998 by record labels BMI and Warner-chappel, the song features on the Album, The Christmas Attic, the second instalment of their Christmas Trilogy.
” The Christmas Canon ” uses the tune of Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major. Johann Pachelbel was a German composer, organist and teacher. He was born in 1653 to a middle-class family in Nuremberg, in the German state of Bavaria.
The city is better known for the international tribunal for war crimes when leading nazi was put on trial between 1945 and 1946. The popularity and use of a wide range of songs, the centuries-old Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major, is considered by many as ” almost the godfather of pop music “.
This song features a children’s choir from ST.Bartholomew’s Church, New York, conducted by American Dan Moriarty. The choir is made up of Anton Spivack, Brendan Burgess, Erick Hernandez, Jack Gibson, Julia George, Julian Drabik, Marilina Acosta, Michelle Repella, Nina Gottlieb, Shoshana Frishberg.

This song is a breakaway from the usual Trans-Siberian Orchestra rock style. Instead, piano and strings are used, they did stay true to their style and recorded a rock version called ” Christmas Rock Cannon “.

Another Trans-Siberian Orchestra song, released in 1996, called ” Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 ” occupies the number three spot for Best-selling Christmas/holiday singles with 763,000 downloads.
