The surprise hit song made its debut on the video-sharing site YouTube in 2013. ” The Fox ( What does the Fox say? ) ” is a novelty electro dance tune and video, originally written and produced for the Norwegian talk show, I kveld med Ylvis ( Tonight with Ylvis ).
The brothers, Vegard and Bård Ylvisåker initially produced the song and accompanying video to promote the latest run of their chat show on TVNorge, the Norwegian television channel.
The brothers had the idea back in 2012, but it was shelved. Then in 2013 Christian Løchstøer revived the idea once again. The duo got together with producers Stargate and M4SONIC ( Nick Boundy ) to work on the song.
The video for ” The Fox ( What does the Fox say? ) ” was uploaded to Youtube on the 3rd of September 2013. In the video the performance is that of a typical song in the electro-pop style, the novelty lyrics are sung in a deadpan manner.
The video went viral and had notched up some 570 Million views on YouTube since the beginning of 2016.
The video was directed by Ole Martin Hafsmo, who has worked on the television series Typical Norwegian and Out in our garden.
The song was only intended for their audience in Norway. However the power of the viral YouTube took over, the whole team behind the song was shocked at the success of the single.
In their native Norway ” The Fox ( What does the Fox say? ) ” entered the VG-Lista Chart and climbed to Number One where it sat for four weeks.
