The Ketchup Song Las Ketchup

” The Ketchup Song ( Aserejé ) ” is by Las Ketchup, the Spanish family pop girl group made up of sisters Lucía, Lola, Pilar and Rocío Muñoz, who was pregnant at the time so stayed out of the limelight.
The sisters were born in Cordoba, a city in Andalusia, southern Spain. The area is famous for having the warmest summer high temperatures in Spain and the rest of Europe and also bullfighting and flamenco dancing.
Las Ketchup, who had never sung in public before, were discovered by Manuel Ruiz, a record producer specialising in flamenco. He signed them to Shaketown Music, his independent Córdoba record label which he ran together with Manuel Illán. Las Ketchup was formed to honour the Muñoz sisters father, Tomate, a renowned flamenco guitarist.
” The Ketchup Song ” was written by Manuel Ruiz and Manny Benito. Manuel’s career as a singer was cut short when he suffered a severe traffic accident in 1990; it was then that he moved into production and management.
Manny Benito has a songwriting credit for the song, after writing ” Aserejé ” in English for the English market. He is a respected producer who has worked artists such as Shakira, Celine Dion, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Marc Anthony, Mónica Naranjo and Franco De Vita.
” The Ketchup Song ” was released 10th of June 2002 by record labels Altra Moda, Columbia and Sony. The song was taken from Las Ketchup’s debut album, Hijas del Tomate. In 2003 the album was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award for Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Released in 2002 it was a success in several countries worldwide, including Spain and Finland where it reached Number One on the albums charts.
According to the book, 1000 UK Number One Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh; the song uses the tune from the opening line of The Sugarhill Gang’s 1979 song ” Rappers Delight “. The line ” I said a hip hop the hippie the hippie to the hip hip hop ” was used by Las Ketchup for the chorus, but changed to say ” Asereje ja de ja de jebe tu de jebere seibiunouva, majavi an de bugui an de buididipi “.
The song tells the story of Diego, a Rastafarian gipsy who likes ” Rappers Delight “, however, he doesn’t know the words so pronounces them as gibberish. ” The Ketchup Song ” is sung using Spanglish, which is a mix of English and Spanish.
The accompanying music video was directed by Mark Kohr, the American music video director. He has worked with many artists including Green Day, Shakira, The Presidents Of The United States Of America, Morcheeba and Tori Amos.
Although the song has a Spanish feel and the sisters are from Spain, the video was filmed in Palm Beach, Florida, USA. They even got the locals to appear in the video as extras.
” The Ketchup Song ” was a commercial success for Las Ketchup. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number fifty-four on the Billboard Hot 100, spending nine weeks on the chart there. It also reached Number One on the Latin Airplay Chart and Number One on the Billboard Tropical Songs Chart.
In the United Kingdom, it entered the UK Singles Chart on the 19th of October 2002 and reached Number One, holding the top spot for one week. It spent thirteen weeks in the Top Ten and a total twenty-two weeks on the UK chart.
