Description: ” The Man with the Child in His Eyes ” is by Kate Bush, the English singer-songwriter, musician and record producer. Kate collected her CBE ( Commander of the Order of the British Empire ) from Her Majesty The Queen on the 10th of April 2013 at a ceremony at Windsor Castle,Berkshire, England.
In 1978, at the age of 19, she made music history by becoming the first female artist to have a UK Number One single with a self penned song, her debut single ” Wuthering Heights ” reached Number One on the UK Singles Chart and held the top slot for four weeks.
” The Man with the Child in His Eyes ” was written by Kate, with production for the single by Andrew Powell and David Gilmour. Andrew is an English musical composer, arranger and performer. His career as an arranger began with his first commission for Cockney Rebel’s debut Album, The Human Menagerie, released in 1973. Andrew has worked with many artists in addition to Kate, including Chris De Burgh, Nick Heyward, Michael Crawford, Elaine Paige, The Hollies and Kansas.
David Gilmour is an English singer, songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. In 1968, David joined the progressive rock band Pink Floyd as guitarist and co-lead vocalist. It has been estimated that Pink Floyd has sold in excess of 250 million records Worldwide, including 75 million in the United States alone. David was made a CBE for his services to music in 2005.
The song was released on the 26th of May 1978 by record label EMI ( Universal Music Group ) and taken as the fifth track from Kate’s debut Album The Kick Inside. The Album which opens with 20 seconds of whale song, reached number three on the UK Albums Chart. The Album has been certified Platinum in the Uk, Canada, Japan and the Netherlands.
” The Man with the Child in His Eyes ” was written by Kate when she was just 13, it wasn’t until she was 16 when she recorded it in 1975 at AIR Studios London. Kate has said that recording the song with a large orchestra at the age of 16 terrified her. The version used for the single slightly differs from the version on the Album version. The single version has the opening phrase “he’s here! ” echoing. The effect was added after the Album, The Kick Inside, was released.
It came to light in September 2010 that ” The Man with the Child in His Eyes ” was written about Steve Blacknell, Kate’s first boyfriend. In an interview in 2010, Steve, a former radio and television presenter, told British newspaper, The Daily Mail, that ” By the spring of 1975 she had become my first true love. All I really knew about her was that she wrote songs, played the piano and lived in a lovely house with an equally lovely family.”
In the same year, Steve offered the original hand-written lyrics for the song for sale through music memorabilia website 991.com. They were written by Kate ” in hot pink felt tip, complete with Kate Bush’s own little pink circles in place of dots over the “I”‘s. ”
The accompanying music video was directed by Keith MacMillan, the British director. He started out designing Albums sleeves and worked as a stills photographer in the latter part of the 1960s. Since those early days, Keith has worked with artists like Motörhead, Pat Benatar, Blondie, Bananarama, Judas Priest and Simple Minds.
” The Man with the Child in His Eyes ” was a commercial success for Kate. In the United States the song peaked at number 85 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and spent 4 weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom it entered the UK Singles Chart on the 10th of June 1978 and reached a peak of number 6. The song spent 4 weeks in the top ten and a total of 11 weeks on the UK chart.
