” The Race ” is by Yello, the Swiss electronic band. The group’s members are Dieter Meier and Boris Blank, with Boris Blank the composer and creator of the group’s distinctive sound, and Dieter Meier supplying the vocals.
Originally Yello was formed by Boris Blank and Carlos Perón in the latter part of the 1970s. Later the two founding members needed a singer and invited Dieter Meier to join the group as the vocal element.
In 1983 Carlos left Yello to pursue a solo career, and the line up became two. Boris Blank the ex-truck driver on keyboards, sampling, percussion, backing vocals and Dieter Meier the millionaire industrialist, professional standard poker player and past member of the Swiss national golf team, became the voice of Yello.
Yello uses samples that are slightly unusual in the music and relies on rhythm with the distinctive voice of Dieter to create the famous tunes.
The group was one of the early pioneers of sampling, along with groups like Art of Noise and the producer Paul Hardcastle of the song ” 19 “.
In 1988 ” The Race ” was released worldwide in formats including 7″ single, 12″ single and CD. Along with these formats a cassette version was also released.
A remix by Paul Dakeyne ( known as Tinman ) was included in a limited edition of the single. Later another remix, this time by Carl Segal was released as a promo only 12″ single.
Since the original release of the song, there have been re-releases of the single with various remixes. In 1992, Yello released a greatest hits collection called Essential and ” The Race ” was re-released for the second time.
The continued popularity of the song led to the song being re-released in 2007, this time a new version of ” The Race ” was created by Yello specifically for a promotion for DHL and Formula 1 racing. This time the song was re-named ” The Race II ” and was only available as a free digital download and a promo CD single.
The song was a commercial success for Yello. In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 27th of August 1988 and peaked at number seven. It spent three weeks in the Top Ten and a total of thirteen weeks on the UK chart.
