The song is a cover of Nik Kershaw’s ” The Riddle “, which was released on the 19th of November 1984 and reached a peak of number 3 in both the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Nik Kershaw had eight singles that entered the top 40 in the United Kingdom. In September of 1983 he released his debut single ” I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me ” which peaked at number 47 on the UK chart and became a hit in Scandinavia, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Nik wrote and co-produced ” The One and Only “, a UK Number One by Chesney Hawkes.
Lyrically ” The Riddle ” is meaningless, at the time of the original release many music critics and public alike failed to understand what the song was about. In an interview Nik shed some light on the song ” In short, [the song ] is nonsense, rubbish, bollocks, the confused ramblings of an 80s popstar “.
” The Riddle Anthem ” was a commercial success for Jack Holiday and Mike Candys. In Switzerland the song entered the Swiss charts on the 9th of December 2012 and reached a peak of number 26 spending 6 weeks on the chart there.
The song was also a hit in Germany, Austria and France. Although it was released in Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands it failed to chart. It was not released in the United Kingdom or the United States.
