In addition to writing hit singles, Rudy also wrote several songs for the Harlem Globetrotters cartoon series, which was popular in the early 1970s.
Cher’s cover of the song was produced by Peter Asher, the British guitarist, singer, manager and record producer. He first came to public attention during the 1960s as a member of the pop music vocal duo Peter and Gordon, then went on to have a successful career as a manager and record producer. First released by Merry Clayton in 1963, the single failed to chart. A year later it was covered by Betty Everett and this time became a hit, reaching Number One on the Cashbox magazine R&B Chart in the United States.
Cher’s cover was played under the closing credits of the 1990 film Mermaids, which alongside Cher starred Bob Hoskins, Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci. Winona Ryder was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for the best-supporting-actress, with the film being Christina Ricci’s acting debut.
The accompanying music video was made to promote the film. It featured Cher with Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci, who played her daughters in the movie. Cher, Winona and Christina wear 1960s style clothes and styles of the period. Scenes from the film are cut into the video.

In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 13th of April 1991 and peaked at Number One, spending five weeks at the top. The song spent ten weeks in the top ten and a total of fifteen weeks on the UK singles chart.
