” The Spirit of the Hawk ” is by Rednex, the Swedish Eurodance band.
Formed in 1994, the band has gone through several line-up changes. They are best known for ” Cotton Eye Jo “, which reached number twenty-five on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and topped the charts in many other countries including the United Kingdom.
The country-dance song was released on the 28th of February 2000 under the record label Zomba Records, part of the Sony Music Group.
The single was written by Gert Landewall, Göran Larsson and Öban Öberg with production by Ranis Edenberg and Öban Öberg.
The song was taken from the group’s second studio album, Farm Out. Released by Jive Records, the album was not as successful as their debut Sex & Violins.
” The Spirit of the Hawk ” features the British voice actor Geoff Oldham, whose career includes work in TV, film and theatre. A talented voice actor he performs with a variety of accents that range from American standard, Native American to Western and Eastern European.
The lyrics in the song feature ” My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no shelter, no food. No one knows where they are. Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. I will fight no more.”
They were taken from a now-famous speech by Chief Joseph, the leader of the Wal-lam-wat-kain ( Wallowa ) band of the Native American tribe, Nez Perce. He died at the age of sixty-four on the 21st of September 1904 at the Colville Indian Reservation, Washington, United States.
” The Spirit of the Hawk ” became a commercial success for Rednex in some European countries.
In Austria, the single topped the chart for six weeks and spent twenty-eight weeks on the chart there.
It also made Number One in Germany and reached number three in Switzerland.
In Sweden, the song reached number ten, and in the Netherlands, it peaked at number seventy-eight. The single did not chart in the United States or the United Kingdom.
