” The Wonder of You ” is by Elvis Presley ( Elvis Aaron Presley ), the American singer and actor. The 3x Grammy award-winning Elvis is considered to be one of the most influential cultural icons of the 20th century.
With estimated record sales of over 600 million, Elvis is the best-selling recording solo artist of all time. Often referred as ” The King of Rock and Roll ” or simply ” The King “, Elvis died on the 16th of August 1977 at Graceland, his home.
The song was written by Baker Knight in 1959, the American songwriter and musician. He wrote songs for many artists including Ricky Nelson, Paul McCartney, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Production for the single was by Felton Jarvis and Elvis Presley. American producer Felton worked with Elvis on most of his recordings from 1966 until 1977. He also produced the first six Albums for American folk, country and bluegrass artist, John Hartford.
” The Wonder of You ” was released on the 20th of April 1970 by record label RCA ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and taken from the album, On Stage, which was certified Platinum by the RIAA ( Recording Industry Association of America ) on the 15th of July 1999. The Album has sold well over 10 million copies worldwide since initially released.
Writer Baker Knight wrote the song for Perry Como ( Pierino Ronald “Perry” Como ), but the song was first recorded not by Perry but Ray Peterson. Ray took the song to number twenty-five on the Billboard Hot 100 and number twenty-three in the United Kingdom in 1959. The same year Ronnie Hilton had a UK number twenty-two with his version.
Although both Ray Peterson and Ronnie Hilton had hits with the song, it’s Elvis Presley who has become the artist most associated with ” The Wonder of You “.
The song was recorded at the International Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA in February 1970 as part of a four-day recording his concerts. The hotel, now called Westgate Las Vegas ( the name was changed on July 1st, 2014 ), was designed by architect Martin Stern, Jr and built-in 1969. Elvis often stayed in room 3000, the penthouse suite which was located on the hotel’s 30th floor.
The arrangement for the song was by American piano player and arranger Glen D Hardin. Glen worked with many artists such as Emmylou Harris, John Denver, Ricky Nelson and Elvis Presley. Glen was also an honorary member of the Crickets, Buddy Holly’s backing band, as he had played with the group many times over several years.
The original backing music was by The Joe Guercio Orchestra with backing vocals by Sweet Inspirations, the Imperials Quartet and Millie Kirkham. Key rhythm section players were James Burton on guitar, Glen D Hardin on piano, Jerry Scheff on bass and the drums were Ronnie Tutt.
This 2016 version is a remake of the original with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra being mixed with original Elvis vocals. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra ( RPO ) is based in London, England and plays venues around the World.
The new version of ” The Wonder of You ” is taken from the album of the same name, with Don Reedman and Nick Patrick as producers this time around. Don worked as a producer on the favourite album More Hooked On Classics with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Nick was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2008 for his production of West Side Story. He has worked with many classical crossover artists like Katherine Jenkins and Russell Watson.
The accompanying music video was filmed at Abbey Road Studios and directed by Vaughan Arnell. The British director regularly works with ex-Take That singer Robbie Williams and has also directed videos for One Direction, George Michael, Spice Girls and Jamiroquai.
In the video supermodel, Kate Moss can be seen lip-syncing to Elvis while wearing outfits that closely resemble those he would wear during performances. During the video, she makes various poses which include leaning on a piano and standing in front of a microphone wearing a black leather jumpsuit, which is similar to the type of jumpsuit Elvis wore in his 1968 comeback TV special, Elvis.
Kate was asked to appear in the video when the director, Vaughan Arnell, noticed that Kate’s most famous fashion shots had a resemblance to the classic shots of Elvis. Although the video is a concept with the two icons, many fans seemed to misunderstand the idea behind the video.
The song was initially a commercial success for Elvis. In the United States, the song peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent twelve weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom ” The Wonder of You ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 11th of July 1970 and reached Number One, it held the top spot for six weeks. It was to be one of Elvis Presley’s most successful UK singles ever. The song spent eleven weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twenty-one weeks on the UK chart.
