Song Title: They
Date of release: 13 March 2005
Description: ” They ” is by Jem ( Jemma Griffiths ) the Welsh singer, songwriter and record producer. The song was written by Jem and Gerard Young with additional writing credit given to Johann Sebastian Bach, the German composer and musician ( 1685-1750 ).
The song was produced by Jem, Ge-ology and Yoad Nevo, the latter is the owner of Nevo Sound Studios in London England and has worked with artists like Moby, Bryan Adams and Goldfrapp.
The electronica pop fusion song includes the sample from the Swingle Singers, a vocal group formed originally in France during the early 1960’s.
Jem uses their 1963 adaptation of Prelude in F minor from Book II of Well-Tempered Clavier ( Keyboard ) by German composer Johann Sebastian Bach.
The song is really about rules that society conform to and who makes them, Jem commented that the song is questioning ” they ” who are making the rules that we all follow.
Jem added ” The example being, and what I wrote it about, was when I went to New York I had read in a New York guide, to not look people in the eye on the subway it kind of implied that I would get shot or something. When I got there I was really scared and literally would not look at anyone.”
She soon realised that these rules often mean nothing and added “Years later I was on the subway every day going to Brooklyn and I thought, ‘Oh my God, it’s fine!’ I had completely believed this book. It made me think about all the things ‘they’ say.”
Two different videos were released for ” They “, in the United Kingdom the video draws inspiration from the film Barbarella and shows Jem stripping in a spaceship while weightless.
Her modesty is cleverly covered by holograms and blurred slightly, a young boy has dreamt her as he builds a model of the spaceship in the video.
In the version of the video released in the United States Jem is walking in a park with children, coming across signs instructing her to do certain things to conform to rules and regulations.
” They ” was to be a commercial success for Jem, in Australia the song reached number 28 on the Australian Recording Industry Association ( ARIA ) Chart.
In Europe the song reached the top ten in Ireland and Poland, in the United Kingdom ” They ” was a huge success.
The song entered the UK chart and climbed to reach number 6, it stayed in the top ten for one week and spent a total of 17 weeks on the chart.
