The song was written by Ed Sheeran, Amy Wadge and Julian Williams. Production was by Jake Gosling, the Grammy award and 2x Brit Award-nominated English music producer, songwriter, remixer, manager and publisher.
Along with Ed Sheeran, Jake has also worked with artists like Adele, Lady Gaga, The Libertines, James Bay, Shawn Mendes, All Time Low, One Direction, Christina Perri and Paloma Faith. Jake’s first tasted mainstream success with the album See Clear Now by Wiley, the English grime artist. The album reached number eighteen on the UK Album Chart. Jake owns Sticky Studios, an independent music recording studio in Windlesham, Surrey, England.
” Thinking Out Loud ” was released on the 24th of September 2014 by record labels Asylum and Atlantic ( both Warner Music Group ) and is taken as the third single from Ed’s second studio Album, Multiply ( X ).
The Album, released on the 20th of June 2014, received positive reviews from critics. Multiply was a massive success worldwide, reaching the top of the charts in fifteen countries. It also occupied the top spot on both the UK Albums Chart and the Billboard 200 in the United States. The Album also reached the Top Five in seven other countries and became the best selling album of 2014 in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Multiply has gone on to sell over ten million copies worldwide.
” Thinking Out Loud ” is a ballad that takes influences from blue-eyed soul, which is a rhythm and blues and soul music, performed by white artists and often called white soul. Some critics noted similarities between the song and 1973 single, ” Let’s Get It On ” by Marvin Gaye. Lyrically the song is about everlasting love, with Ed later revealing that inspiration for the lyrics was also about his then-girlfriend, Athina Andrelos.
The accompanying music video was directed by Emil Nava, the British director. Emil left school at sixteen and started a career as a chef. He found fame after working on the video for ” Do It Like A Dude “, the UK Singles Chart number two debut single by Jessie J. Emil has directed over 100 music videos. He has worked with a variety of artists including Jessie J, Calvin Harris, Jennifer Lopez, Ellie Goulding, Rita Ora, Bebe Rexha and Camila Cabello.
” Thinking Out Loud ” was a commercial success for Ed. In the United States, it reached a peak of number two on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, kept off the top by ” Uptown Funk “, the Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars hit single.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 5th of July 2014 and topped the chart for two weeks. It spent twenty weeks in the Top Ten and 118 weeks on the chart there.
The single also topped the charts in Australia, Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands, Mexico, Slovakia and South Africa.
