” This Is What You Came For ” is by Calvin Harris ( Adam Richard Wiles ), the Scottish record producer, singer, songwriter and DJ. The song was written by Calvin Harris ( who also produced the track ) and Taylor Swift.
” This Is What You Came For ” was released on the 29th of April 2016 by record labels Sony, Westbury Road and Columbia ( owned by Sony Music Entertainment ). Westbury Road is Rihanna’s record label, named after the area where she grew up in Barbados.
The midtempo house-influenced song features Barbadian singer Rihanna ( Robyn Rihanna Fenty ) and is the third single her and Calvin have worked on together after ” We Found Love ” a Worldwide chart-topper and ” Where Have You Been “, which made the Billboard Hot 100 top five. Both songs feature on Rihanna’s sixth Album, Talk That Talk, which was released in 2011.
Initially, the songwriting credits were Calvin Harris and Nils Sjöberg, a name used by Taylor Swift to hide her true identity. On the 13th of July 2016, celebrity gossip magazine, TMZ.com, reported that the song was in fact co-written by Calvin’s then-girlfriend Taylor Swift. Nils Sjöberg was used because they didn’t want their relationship to take centre stage and overshadow the song.
Upon release of the track, Calvin was asked by Ryan Seacrest in an interview if there was ever a possibility of him and Taylor collaborating, Calvin replied that he ” can’t see it happening “.
He confirmed to his Twitter account that Taylor wrote the lyrics and had added some vocals. He stressed that he ” wrote the music, produced the song, arranged it and cut the vocals “. He also confirmed that he’d agreed to the secrecy of his co-writer, as requested by Taylor.
Since then Taylor has officially been credited as co-writer in her name ( and not of Nils Sjöberg ) by Broadcast Music Inc or BMI as it’s more widely known. Broadcast Music Inc is a performing rights organisation which collects royalties on behalf of artists. The body is one of three along with ASCAP, Global Music Rights and SESAC.
The accompanying music video was directed by Emil Nava, who also directed Calvin’s video for his 2014 hit single ” Summer “. He has also worked with many artists including Ed Sheeran, Jessie J, Rihanna and Ellie Goulding. Emil won the MTV VMA for Best Male Video with Ed Sheeran’s ” Sing “.
The video mainly features Rihanna with Calvin in a cameo driving a Lamborghini Aventador sports car. After being released for just two months on VEVO the video notched up 500 Million views, making it the second fastest video on VEVO to do so.
Commercially the song was successful for Calvin and Rihanna. In the United States, the song made its debut at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart; it climbed to peak at number three. ” This Is What You Came For ” became Rihanna’s 28th Billboard Top Ten hit and Calvin’s fourth.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 12th of May 2016 at number two. It spent fifteen weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twenty-two weeks on the UK chart.
