” This Ole House ” is by Shakin Stevens ( Michael Barratt ), the Rock ‘n’ Roll singer and songwriter from Wales in the United Kingdom.
The song was written by Stuart Hamblen was known as the Singing Cowboy in 1954, this version of ” This Ole House ” was produced by Stuart Coleman.
Back in the 1950s, Stuart Hamblen was out with actor and fellow hunter John Wayne on the High Sierra mountain range; there they came across an old prospector’s cabin.
Inside they found an old man dead from what seemed like natural causes in the cabin’s back room while riding back down the mountain Stuart came up with the lyrics and then composed the melody with the week.
In 1954 the song was a hit for singer Rosemary Clooney, the first outing of ” This Ole House ” reached Number One in both the United States and United Kingdom.
In the United Kingdom, the song was already recorded by artists Billie Anthony and Alma Cogan when Rosemary Clooney took her version to the top of the UK Singles Chart.
In 1981 Shakin’ Stevens released his cover version of the song after previous chart successes, Shakin Stevens now had a chart-topping hit single in the United Kingdom.
” This Ole House ” went straight to Number One in the UK for three weeks and stayed on the UK Singles Chart for a total of seventeen weeks.
The song had been a considerable success some thirty-one years earlier. However, Shakin Stevens claimed that he was unaware of the song before recording it.
In an interview with the UK teen pop fortnightly music magazine Smash Hits ( 1978 to 2006 ), Shakin Stevens told Robin Katz he was in Los Angeles when he was invited to hear a friends record collection.
There he heard ” This Ole House ” for the first time and said ” What’s really amazing is that nobody thought to cover it before. ”
Shakin Stevens had massive success with the song with chart positions across Europe. In Austria, the song entered the chart at number thirteen and climbed to reach number eight, staying on the chart for six weeks.
In Switzerland, he scored a number four after entering the chart at number thirteen, there the song remained on the chart for seven weeks.
