” Together Forever ” is by Rick Astley ( Richard Paul ” Rick ” Astley ), the British singer and radio personality. Born in Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire ( a market town in Merseyside, England ), Rick began singing at the age of 10 for his local church choir.
In 1985, record producer discovered Rick singing lead vocals for a band called FBI. He was persuaded to work in London at the PWL studio, supposedly as a tea boy. His first single was titled ” When You Gonna ” which Rick sang with Lisa Carter, the single didn’t chart.
Rick went solo and released ” Never Gonna Give You Up ” which he recorded in 1987 on New Year’s Day. The song became a huge success, spending five weeks at the top of the UK Singles Chart, it also topped charts around the world, including the United States.
Rick retired in 1993 with worldwide record sales of over 40 Million. Although officially he retired in 1993, Rick has continued touring and in 2016 released a new album, Simply 50.
” Together Forever ” was written and produced by Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman. Stock Aitken Waterman, also known as SAW is a British songwriting and record producing trio made up of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman. The trio enjoyed success in the latter part of the 80s and early part of the 90s.
Stock, Aitken and Waterman are one of the most successful songwriting and producing teams of all time. The songwriters and producers had more than 100 UK Top Forty hit singles; their earnings are estimated to be around $104 million. Stock Aitken Waterman have notched up sales somewhere in the region of 40 million records.
The song was released on the 12th of January 1988 by record label RCA ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and was taken from Rick’s debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody.
The album, released on the 16th of November 1987, peaked at number ten on the Billboard 200 in the United States and Number One on the Albums Chart in the United Kingdom. According to Rick’s website, the album has worldwide sales of 15.2 Million.
The song was intended as a follow up to Rick’s hugely successful debut single. Mike Stock told Billboard during an interview ” What else is there ( on the Album ) that really does compare? We thought we needed ‘ Together Forever ‘ to get home to people what Rick could be. ”
The single was a commercial success for Rick. In the United States, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 for one week, spending a total of eighteen weeks on the chart there. It also reached number two on the Adult Contemporary and Number One on the Dance Club Songs charts.
In the United Kingdom, ” Together Forever ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 27th of February 1988 and reached a peak of number two.
It spent four weeks in the Top Ten and a total of nine weeks on the UK chart.
