Total Eclipse of the Heart Bonnie Tyler

Song Title: Total Eclipse of the Heart

Artist: Bonnie Tyler

Date of release: 11 February 1983 (UK) 31 May 1983 (US)

Description: ” Total Eclipse of the Heart ” is by Bonnie Tyler ( Gaynor Hopkins ), the Welsh singer.
The song was written and produced by Jim Steinman, the Grammy Award-winning record producer who is best known for working with Meatloaf on the multi-million selling Album, Bat out of hell.
The song was released by record label Columbia in 1983 and taken from Bonnie’s fifth Album, Faster Than the Speed of Night.
After splitting from her management in 1981, Bonnie started looking for new songs and a producer. Bonnie said in an interview ” I’d always been a big fan of Phil Spector and that huge sound he used to get. ”
The producer at the top of Bonnie’s list was Jim Steinman along with Phil Collins, Jeff Lynne and Alan Tarney. However, when the record company approached Jim Steinman to work with Bonnie he was already committed to a movie project so declined the request.
Bonnie had almost given up on the idea of working with Jim when he rang out of the blue and said he’d work with her if she hadn’t found a producer.
After flying to New York to meet Jim in his apartment Bonnie was played two songs by Jim, one was the Blue Oyster Cult, Going Through The Motions and the other, Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ” Have You Ever Seen The Rain “.
Bonnie later commented that if she’d not liked either of the songs, then Jim wouldn’t have worked with her, a few weeks later she returned and was played ” Total Eclipse of the Heart “, Jim had also hand-picked a band of top musicians to work with Bonnie on the song.
A pretty impressive bunch of musicians were put forward including Brue Springsteen’s E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg and keyboard player Roy Bitten and guitarist Rick Derringer.
The video that accompanies ” Total Eclipse of the Heart ” was directed by Russell Mulcahy and filmed on location at the Holloway Sanatorium, a sizeable former institution for the insane built between 1873 and 1885.
Set in 22 acres of parkland near Virginia Water, Surrey in the United Kingdom, this elegant Franco-Gothic style building is now a gated housing development renamed Virginia Park.
Under the guidance of English Heritage, many of the original features shown in the video have been preserved.
In the video Bonnie wears white and fantasises about her male students in the boarding school, these students can be seen performing various school activities.
Once the video was aired an urban myth grew over the years about one of the boys in the video who appears throughout and shake’s Bonnie’s hand at the end, some have said the boy is the former Italian footballer Gianfranco Zola.
However later in 2012, Gianfranco stated that he’d never appeared in the video.
” Total Eclipse of the Heart ” was a commercial success for Bonnie, in the United States the song reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for four weeks and spent twenty-nine weeks on the chart.
The song also reached the top in various countries including Australia, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
In the United Kingdom, Bonnie took the song to Number One for two weeks; the song spent six weeks in the Top Ten and a total of sixteen weeks on the UK chart.
” Total Eclipse of the Heart ” has sold well over six million copies Worldwide and remains Bonnie’s biggest hit of her career to date.
