” Trick Me ” is by Kelis ( Kelis Rogers ), the American singer, songwriter and chef. Kelis was born on the 21st of August 1979 and raised in Harlem, New York City.
The neighbourhood is located in the northern section of the New York City borough of Manhattan. The area took its name from the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands and has been a major African American residential, cultural and business centre since the 1920s.
Kelis grew up in a musical household with her father, Kenneth, playing in African American jazz bands. She regularly sang in church choirs and played musical instruments such as the violin, piano and saxophone.
A friend of Kelis’ introduced her to The Neptunes, an American production duo made up of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, and with their support, she signed with the Virgin Record label. Her debut album, Kaleidoscope, released on the 7th of December 1999, reached a peak of number 144 on the Billboard 200 Chart and number forty-three in the United Kingdom.
Kelis has worldwide sales of six million records, finding particular success in the United Kingdom. There ten of her single releases have entered the top ten of the UK Singles Chart.
” Trick Me ” was written and produced by Dallas Austin, the American record producer, songwriter, musician and film producer. As a record producer, he has worked with artists like Madonna, George Michael, TLC, Grace Jones, Pink, Duran Duran, Gwen Stefani, Boyz II Men, Carly Rae Jepsen, Brand New Heavies and McFly.
The song was released on the 17th of February 2004 by record label Virgin ( Universal Music Group ) and taken as the second single from Kelis’ third studio album, Tasty.
The album, released on the 5th of December 2003, debuted at number twenty-seven on the Billboard 200 Chart, selling 93,600 copies in its first-week. Tasty was also a success in the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number eleven on the UK Albums Chart, becoming her highest-peaking album in the country.
” Trick Me ” was well received by music critics on both sides of the Atlantic. Tony Naylor, writing for the New Musical Express ( NME ), a British music magazine, referred to the song as ” a wonderful computer-processed reggae romp ” while Blender, an American music magazine which ran from 1994 to 2009, called the song a ” crackling funk ditty “.
The accompanying music video was directed by Director X ( Julien Christian Lutz ), the Canadian music video director. Director X is of Trinidadian and Swiss descent and was born and raised near Toronto, the capital of the Canadian province of Ontario. In 2015, he founded Popp Rok, his production company based in Toronto. Director X has worked with many artists including Fifth Harmony, Zayn Malik, Iggy Azalea, Flo Rida and Bebe Rexha.
” Trick Me ” was a commercial success for Kelis. Although not released in the United States as the record label, Arista had folded, it did reach number seven on the Billboard Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 5th of June 2004 and reached a peak of number two. It spent five weeks in the Top Ten and a total of fourteen weeks on the UK chart.
