” Truly Madly Deeply ” is by Savage Garden, who was an Australian pop duo consisting of vocalist Darren Hayes and instrumentalist Daniel Jones. The song was written by Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones.
Production for the single was by Charles Fisher, the Australian record producer, who is also known as ” The Song Doctor “. He has worked with many artists including Air Supply, Olivia Newton-John, The Radiators, The Seekers, Deep Blue Something and Ace of Base.
The single was released on the 3rd of March 1997 by record labels Columbia for the International release, Roadshow Music for the release in Australia and Sony Records in Japan. It was taken as the 3rd single for their debut album, Savage Garden.
There are two separate versions of the song. The first was made available on the Australian release of the album; the second version is featured on the release of the album in Europe and America. The second version was composed in 1996 and uses a drum machine instead of the more acoustic feel that can be heard on the Australian version.
The European version is featured on Truly Madly Completely, their greatest hits compilation. ” Truly Madly Deeply ” is a reworked version of a song called ” Magical Kisses “, which was written by the duo and included on a demo cassette they showed record companies, a long time before recording began on the album.
Darren recalled during an interview with Billboard magazine back in 2011 ” The verses were the same, but I’m rather embarrassed to admit the chorus did not exist. Instead, I’d written an awful lyric about magical kisses “.
He Added, ” There was always something incredibly magical about the song, however, and when it reached the ears of producer Charles Fisher, who produced the first Savage Garden album, he proclaimed it to be a potential hit. It sat on the bottom of the pile of our demos for the entire eight-month recording process until the eve of the last day. I sat alone, at the Bayswater Cafe in Sydney, and completely re-wrote the chorus you hear today over a cup of coffee. I sang it the next day, and the rest is history. ”
Two separate videos were made to accompany the song. The original video for the Australian market featured Darren with long hair; it showed the band in a white room with several other people. Darren sits on a red sofa singing while bandmate Daniel performs on the piano.
The video released for the European market, which shows Darren with short hair, was filmed in Paris and was directed by Adolfo Doring.
Director Adolfo has worked with many artists in addition to Savage Garden; they include Del Amitri, Gin Blossoms, Hootie & The Blowfish and Manic Street Preachers. This version tells the story of two lovers who, due to circumstances, have been separated.
” Truly Madly Deeply ” was a commercial success for Savage Garden. In the United States the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number twenty-six on the 6th December 1997, it reached Number One for two weeks in January 1998.
The song spent twelve months on the chart there; it also set a record for the most weeks of any single in the history of the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 28th of February 1998 and reached a peak of number four.
It spent eleven weeks in the Top Ten and a total of thirty-two weeks on the UK chart.
