” Turn Back Time ” is by Aqua, the Danish-Norwegian Eurodance group. The song was written by Søren Rasted and Claus Norreen. Søren is a Danish musician, producer, songwriter and member of Aqua. He plays keyboard, guitar and sings backing vocals and is married to Lene Nystrøm, the Aqua lead vocalist.
Claus is also a Danish musician and member of Aqua. Born in Charlottenlund, near Copenhagen, he wanted to become a chemist when at school but instead pursued his other interest, electropop music.
Production for the single was by Johnny Jam, Delgado, Søren Rasted and Claus Norreen. ” Turn Back Time ” was released on the 18th of May 1998 by record label Universal and taken as Aqua’s sixth ( seventh single overall ) from their debut Album Aquarium.
The Album debuted at Number One in Denmark, and as of August 2001, sales stand around 430,000 copies in the country. The Aquarium Album is the third best-selling Album in Denmark to date, only beaten by Danish recording artist Kim Larsen’s Album Midt om natten released in 1983 and the Forklædt som voksen Album released in 1986. Worldwide, the Album has sold 14 million copies.
” Turn Back Time ” is a ballad that shows the quality of Lene Nystrøm’s voice. It was due to be released in April but was held back for a month to coincide with the release of the film Sliding Doors, in which the song was included.
Sliding Doors is a British-American romantic drama film written and directed by Peter Howitt which was released in 1998. Starring Gwyneth Paltrow and John Hannah, the plot switches between two parallel universes. The film focuses on the central character, Helen Quilley ( Gwyneth Paltrow ) and how a series of random events can alter the course of someone’s life.
The accompanying music video for the single featured footage from the film Sliding Doors. It was a very different approach than the previous, comedy videos used by the group to promote their singles. There are two edits to the video, and one has more clips from the film than the other one. A lot of the video was filmed on the abandoned platform five at Holborn tube station, part of London Underground network.
” Turn Back Time ” was a commercial success for Aqua. In the United States, the song reached number eighteen on the Billboard Pop Songs Chart and number forty-nine on the Billboard Radio Songs Chart.
In the United Kingdom, it entered the UK Singles Chart on the 16th of May 1998 and peaked at Number One, which it held for one week. The song spent three weeks in the Top Ten and a total of ten weeks on the UK chart. The single was Aqua’s third Number One single in the United Kingdom, making the group one of the few groups to have their first three singles go to Number One.
