” Turn Off the Light ” is by Nelly Furtado, the Canadian singer-songwriter. The song was released on the 14th of August 2001 under the DreamWorks and Jive record labels.
The single was written by Nelly Furtado, with production by the singer, Canadian R&B singer-songwriter and producer Gerald Eaton, along with Canadian musician, Brian West.
The lyrics revolve around the eternal reality of how we all become so lonely after we turn off the light. The singer has described the track as a “ real song with hooky fun chorus. ” According to the singer, the single was inspired by a song composed by Canadian band Big Sugar.
” Turn Off the Light ” was taken as the second single from Whoa, Nelly!, Nelly Furtado’s debut studio album, released on the 24th of October 2000. The album peaked at number two in the United Kingdom and Canada and reached number twenty-four in the United States.
The accompanying video ( normal ) was directed by Sophie Muller, the English music video director. She has worked with some of the most successful recording artists including Beyoncé, Coldplay, No Doubt, Gwen Stefani, Shakira, The Killers, Radiohead, Annie Lennox, Björk, Leona Lewis and Pink.
There are two versions of the video, the normal and the underground version, which features Nelly Furtado with a guitar in a wooden shed and buying flowers. Behind the scenes footage of the photoshoot for the album cover is interwoven through the length of the video.
” Turn Off the Light ” was a commercial success for Nelly Furtado. In the United States, the song peaked at number five on the 10th of November 2001 and spent twenty-five weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached number eleven on the Adult Top 40, fifty-five on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, three on the Mainstream Top 40 charts. It topped the Billboard Dance Club Songs Chart.
In the United Kingdom, ” Turn Off the Light ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 1st of September 2001 and reached a peak of number four. It spent two weeks in the Top Ten and eleven weeks on the Top 100.
Elsewhere the single topped the charts in New Zealand, Portugal and Romania. Nelly Furtado took the song into the Top Ten in Australia, Belgium ( Wallonia ), Canada, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Scotland, Sweden and Switzerland.
