The song was written by Cathy Dennis and Simon Ellis. Cathy is an English singer, songwriter, record producer and actress. After finding success as a solo artist, she turned her attention to writing pop songs. Eight of her songs became Number Ones in the United Kingdom, including ” Can’t Get You Out of My Head “, which she co-wrote with Rob Davis. Cathy has won five Ivor Novello Awards and a Grammy for co-writing ” Toxic ” by Britney Spears.
Simon Ellis is a producer and musical director; he has worked with many artists as a writer and producer including John Farnham, Randy Crawford, Steps, Britney Spears, the Spice Girls, Westlife, S Club 7 and East 17.
He started his career in music as a member of the band Ellis Beggs, and Howard who had a number forty-one UK Singles Chart hit with ” Big Bubbles, No Troubles ” in 1988. In addition to songwriting, Simon is a well regarded Musical Director; he worked on the Circus Tour for Britney Spears and the Spice Girls world tour of 2008.
Production for the single was by Stargate, the Norwegian record producing and songwriting team. The Los Angeles based duo consisting of Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Storleer Eriksen. The team have worked with some of the most popular stars in music including Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Britney Spears, Coldplay, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Shakira and Katy Perry. They have been nominated for sixteen Grammys, winning four.
” Two In A Million ” was released on the 13th of December 1999 by record label Polydor Records ( Universal Music Group ) and taken as the third single from the group’s debut studio album, S Club.
The Album, released on the 4th of October 1999, became one of their most successful Albums, reaching number two on the UK Albums Chart. It was certified 2x Platinum in the UK by the British Phonographic Industry ( BPI ) with sales of over 700,000. S Club, released on the 11th of April 2000 in North America, was certified Gold there.
The success was due to their television show S Club 7 in Miami becoming popular there. In Canada, it charted inside the Top Ten, making it their most successful Album on the Canadian Albums Chart.
The song, described as ” a song about falling in love, having somebody to comfort you, and someone to be there for you no matter what “, sees band member, Jo O’Meara, take on the lead vocals for the first time.
The accompanying music video was directed by Andrew Margetson, the London based director, writer and dance enthusiast. In addition to working on music videos for S Club 7, he has worked on commercials and documentaries which included Lonely Planet, the long-running travel series. The video was filmed on location in Los Angeles, California and features the band members preparing themselves for a party. As of the 20th of January 2018, the video has gained 1.2 million views on YouTube.
” Two In A Million ” was a commercial success for S Club 7. In the United Kingdom, the single was released as a double A-side with ” You’re My Number One ” and entered the UK Singles Chart on the 25th of December 1999, peaking at number two. It spent five weeks in the Top Ten and eleven weeks on the UK chart.
The single also charted in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland and Switzerland.
