Umbrella Rihanna

” Umbrella ” by Rihanna is from her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, released in 2007. The song also features Jay-Z the American rapper.
Written by Jay-Z and producers Tricky Stewart and Kuk Harrell and additional writing from The-Dream, the song is about a romantic and platonic relationship sung in a hip-hop and R&B style.
Initially, the song was offered to Britney Spears, but her record company rejected it. Instead, Rihanna took on the project.
” Umbrella ” won critical acclaim from many music critics who loved the ” Ella, Ella ” hook in the song and the deliverance by Rihanna.
Released by the record label Def Jam, the song was a massive commercial success with Number Ones in many countries around the world including Australia, Canada, Germany, Spain, the Republic of Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
However, not everyone was acclaiming the song, in the United Kingdom at the time was experiencing the worst rain for years. To have a song at the top of the UK Singles Chart and playing almost constantly on the radio just rubbed salt into the country’s wounds.
However, despite the rain in the United Kingdom, ” Umbrella ” managed to keep the Number One spot for ten consecutive weeks, which became a record for the longest run at Number One for that decade and one of the few songs to do so there.
The success at the top of the UK Chart was matched with a run at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks.
With single sales and radio play firm, the awards soon followed. Ranked Number One on the 10 Best Singles of 2007 by Entertainment Weekly, while both Rolling Stone magazine and Time magazine listed ” Umbrella ” at number three on the 100 Best Songs of 2007.
Along with accolades from top magazines, Rihanna also has won several awards and nominations.
In 2007, the song picked up two Awards out of four nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards. In 2008, at the Grammy Awards, ” Umbrella ” earned both Rihanna and Jay-Z best Rap/Sung Collaboration and nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Rolling Stone magazine has listed this song as number 412 of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
