Description: ” Under The Moon Of Love ” is by Showaddywaddy, the Rock ‘n’ Roll revival group from Leicester in the United Kingdom. The song was initially written by Tommy Boyce and Curtis Lee.
Production for this version of the song was done by Mike Hurst, who was in the 1960’s group The Springfields, a British folk-pop vocal trio.
Originally the song was released by record label Dunes Records in 1961 and became a minor hit single for Curtis Lee reaching number forty-six on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and spending a total of seven weeks on the chart there.
The legendary record producer Phil Spector, better known for the Wall of Sound ( also known as the Spector Sound ) produced the original for Curtis.
Curtis Lee wrote the song along with Tommy Boyce, Curtis later left the music industry and in 1969 joined the construction industry with his father. Curtis passed away at the age of seventy-five on the 8th of January 2015 from cancer in Yuma Arizona in the US.
Tommy Boyce, who co-wrote with Curtis ” Under The Moon Of Love ” had written more than three hundred songs and notched up more than 42 Million record sales as a partnership.
Tommy Boyce lived in the United Kingdom for a while before returning to the United States; there he struggled to overcome depression and later suffered a brain aneurysm. Tommy committed suicide on the 23rd of November 1994.
” Under The Moon Of Love ” was covered by Mud, the British 70’s Glam rock band famous for ” Tiger Feet “, in 1975 for their Album ” Use Your Imagination ” which peaked at number thirty-three on the UK Albums Chart.
They also added the song as a B-side for their 1976 single ” Beating Around The Bush ” which failed to make the chart.
A year later in 1976, ” Under The Moon Of Love ” was covered and released by Showaddywaddy. The eight lads from Leicester brought the original to life with their teddy boy look and turned the song into a number one hit single in the United Kingdom and a Top Ten in other European countries.
” Under The Moon Of Love “entered the UK Singles Chart on the 6th of November 1976 and reached Number One, Showaddywaddy held the top spot for three weeks.
The song spent nine weeks in the top ten and a total of 15 weeks on the UK chart.
