” Uptown Girl ” was written by Billy Joel with production for the single by Phil Ramone. In 1959 he partnered with Jack Arnold to set up A & R Recording, the name deriving from the last initials of their surnames. Quickly the studio was playing host to some of the biggest recording artists from Burt Bacharach, Bono and Elton John to Madonna, Paul McCartney and George Michael.
Along with producing, Phil also had many concert, film, Broadway and television production credits to his name which included A Star is Born, Flashdance, Ghostbusters, Midnight Cowboy and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
During his career he was nominated for 34 Grammy awards, which 14 of those he won, including a Technical Grammy Award in 2005 for a lifetime of innovative contributions to the recording industry. Phil Ramone died in 2013 at the age of 79.
” Uptown Girl ” was released on the 29th of September 1983 by record label Columbia Records ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and taken from Billy’s ninth Album, An Innocent Man. It was designed as a concept Album to pay homage to music from the 50s doo-wop and soul music from the 60s.
The Album was nominated for Album of the Year at the 26th Grammy Awards only to be beaten by Michael Jackson’s Thriller. It was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for ” Uptown Girl ” but was again was beaten by Thriller. The Album was a commercial success for Billy. In the United States the Album peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200 Chart and in the United Kingdom it reached number 2 on the UK Albums Chart.
Billy got the inspiration for the song from an occasion when he was surrounded by Christie Brinkley, Whitney Houston and Elle Macpherson, his girlfriend at the time. Originally the song was to be called ” Uptown Girls “. Billy has stated in many interviews since the song was released that originally he wrote the song about his relationship with Elle Macpherson, the song, however, also became about his Christie Brinkley, who he was about to marry. The song’s inspiration, along with the 80s supermodels came from the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
The accompanying music video was directed by Jay Dubin, the American video director. In addition to this song, he has worked with Billy Joel on videos for The Longest Time, Goodnight Saigon and Tell Her About It. During his career he has also directed videos for artists like John Mellencamp and REO Speedwagon.
” Uptown Girl ” was a commercial success for Billy. In the United States the song reached a peak of number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, spending 22 weeks on the chart there. It also peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart and number 22 on the Mainstream Rock Chart.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 8th of October 1983 and reached Number One, holding the top position for 5 weeks. It spent 8 weeks in the top ten and a total of 18 weeks on the UK chart.
The song sold 975,000 copies in the United Kingdom, making it the 19th biggest-selling single of the 1980s in the country. As of 2013 the song has sold 1.02 million copies in the UK.
