” Uptown Girl ” is by Billy Joel ( William Martin ” Billy ” Joel ), the American singer-songwriter and pianist. It was his 1973 song ” Piano Man ” that launched Billy’s career, since then he has gone on to be the sixth best-selling recording artist and the third best-selling solo artist in the United States.
His Album, Greatest Hits Vol. 1 & 2, is one of the best-selling albums in the United States. Billy is a 6x Grammy Award-winning artist with 23 Grammy Awards nominations to his name. His sales have exceeded 150 Million, which makes him one of the best-selling artists of all time.
” Uptown Girl ” was written by Billy Joel with production for the single by Phil Ramone. In 1959 he partnered with Jack Arnold to set up A & R Recording, the name deriving from the last initials of their surnames. Quickly the studio was playing host to some of the most prominent recording artists from Burt Bacharach, Bono and Elton John to Madonna, Paul McCartney and George Michael.
Along with producing, Phil also had many concert, film, Broadway and television production credits to his name which included A Star is Born, Flashdance, Ghostbusters, Midnight Cowboy and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
During his career, he was nominated for thirty-four Grammy awards, which fourteen of those he won, including a Technical Grammy Award in 2005 for a lifetime of innovative contributions to the recording industry. Phil Ramone died in 2013 at the age of 79.
” Uptown Girl ” was released on the 29th of September 1983 by record label Columbia Records ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and taken from Billy’s ninth Album, An Innocent Man. It was designed as a concept Album to pay homage to music from the 50s doo-wop and soul music from the 60s.
The Album was nominated for Album of the Year at the 26th Grammy Awards only to be beaten by Michael Jackson’s Thriller. It was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for ” Uptown Girl ” but was again was defeated by Thriller. The Album was a commercial success for Billy. In the United States the Album peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 Chart, and in the United Kingdom, it reached number two on the UK Albums Chart.
Billy got the inspiration for the song from a time when he was surrounded by Christie Brinkley, Whitney Houston and Elle Macpherson, his girlfriend at the time. Initially, the song was to be called ” Uptown Girls “. Billy has stated in many interviews since the song was released that initially, he wrote the song about his relationship with Elle Macpherson, the song, however, also became about his Christie Brinkley, who he was about to marry. The song’s inspiration, along with the 80s supermodels came from the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
The accompanying music video was directed by Jay Dubin, the American video director. In addition to this song, he has worked with Billy Joel on videos for The Longest Time, Goodnight Saigon and Tell Her About It. During his career, he has also directed videos for artists like John Mellencamp and REO Speedwagon.
” Uptown Girl ” was a commercial success for Billy. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number three on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, spending twenty-two weeks on the chart there. It also peaked at number two on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart and number twenty-two on the Mainstream Rock Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 8th of October 1983 and reached Number One, holding the top position for five weeks. It spent eight weeks in the Top Ten and a total of eighteen weeks on the UK chart.
The song sold 975,000 copies in the United Kingdom, making it the 19th biggest-selling single of the 1980s in the country. As of 2013, the song has sold 1.02 million copies in the UK.
