Vienna Ultravox

” Vienna ” by Ultravox a new wave band originally formed in London in 1974. The song was taken as their third single from the group’s fourth album.
Released on the 15th of January 1981 by the record label Chrysalis Records, the song failed to reach the Number One spot in the United Kingdom, peaking at number two.
Two different songs by two diverse artists kept ” Vienna ” away from the coveted Number One. Firstly John Lennon’s ” Woman ” held off for one week then a novelty song called ” Shaddap You Face ” held onto the top spot for another three weeks.
Despite this, Ultravox did manage to sell more copies overall and went on to be the fifth best seller in the United Kingdom during 1981.
Along with being the best seller of that year, ” Vienna ” also won Single of the Year at the Brit awards in 1981. Still today it is known as Ultravox’s signature tune and being their most successful song to date.
During the Live Aid concert in 1985, the group played the song at Wembley Stadium, lead singer, Midge Ure, still plays the song in solo live performances.
” Vienna ” was written by drawing inspiration from the classic 1948 film, The Third Man, which was based in Vienna, the Capital city of Austria, along with The Walker Brothers single ” The Electrician “, 1978 single which wasn’t a hit in its own right.
In April 1992 ” Vienna ” was re-recorded and released as a single in Germany by a new line up. Unfortunately, this new version failed to chart and was left off the album, Revelation.
The reformed Ultravox didn’t include Midge Ure but did have one original member of the group, Billy Currie, who played keyboards, violin and percussion. Vocals were supplied by Tony Fenelle who also played guitar and percussion.
