” Vogue ” was written by Shep Pettibone and Madonna ( who co-produced the track ). Shep is an American record producer, remixer, songwriter and club DJ.
During the 80s, he was one of the most sought-after DJs on the club circuit. With a talent for production and mixing, Shep worked with top recording artists like Madonna and George Michael in the latter part of the 1980s.
Along with Arthur Baker, he helped bring the use of scratching, often used in dance and hip-hop, into the mainstream. Shep has worked with many artists including Afrika Bambaataa, Bananarama, The B-52’s, Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie, David Essex, Depeche Mode, Debbie Harry, Diana Ross and Elton John.
The song was released on the 27th of March 1990 by record label Sire Records ( Warner Music Group ) and taken as the first single from Madonna’s second soundtrack Album; I’m Breathless.
The Album, released on the 22nd of May 1990, was released to promote and accompany the American action comedy film Dick Tracy. Warren Beatty produced, directed and starred along with Madonna. The album, which is made up of predominantly jazz, swing and pop songs, took three weeks to record.
The upbeat dance-pop and house song use influences are taken from 70s disco in the composition. Lyrically it is about enjoying yourself on the dance floor no matter who you are. The theme of the song is about escapism.
The inspiration for the song came from Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza and Luis Xtravaganza, vogue dancers and choreographers from the Harlem ” House Ball ” community. They introduced ” Vogueing ” to Madonna at the Sound Factory club in New York City. Called initially Private Eyes, the nightclub was situated at 530 West 27th Street in New York. The nightclub became notorious for drug use, and as part of the crackdown by authorities, it was closed down.
” Vogue ” contains a spoken section, in which the Madonna name-checks screen stars. She mentions Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Joe DiMaggio, Marlon Brando, Jimmy Dean, Grace Kelly, Jean Harlow, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Rita Hayworth, Lauren Bacall, Katharine Hepburn, Lana Turner and Bette Davis.

The accompanying music video shot in black-and-white was directed by David Fincher, the American director and producer. Born on the 28th of August 1962 in Denver, Colorado, David is an award-winning director of both music videos and films.
