The vocals for the song are by Aloe Blacc, the American hip-hop artist and singer, while the acoustic guitar is provided by Incubus lead guitarist Mike Einziger.
” Wake Me Up ” was released by PRMD Music, Lava Records and Columbia Records and was taken as the first single from Avicii’s first Album, True.
In the accompanying video the two females, the older girl played by Russian fashion model Kristina Romanova and the younger girl is Laneya Grace. The two girls are outcasts in the community and do not fit in, the older girl then finds a place where people have the same tattoo.
She goes back and gets the younger one and leaves to find happiness in a new place where they fit in.
First released on YouTube in June 2013, the video lasts for over four minutes.
In the video, there is a clear cross-promotion of Denim & Supply by Ralph Lauren along with Sony Xperia Z smartphone. Location for the video was split between Santa Clara River orange groves, the Californian town of Piru and Downtown LA.
Views of the video from the official YouTube channel of Avicii are over 840 Million making it twenty-seventh most viewed on there.
” Wake Me Up ” was a huge commercial success for Avicii, the song reached Number One in twenty-two countries and reached the Top Ten in many others.
The song was successful in North America, in Canada it reached number two and number four on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The likes of Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Lorde keeping Avicii out of the Top Three.
However, ” Wake Me Up ” did spend over a year on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, making it the first Dance/Electronic song to do so.
In addition to this feat, the song was the first dance/electronic song to shift four million copies in the United States.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at Number One, with sales of 267,000 in its first week it was the fastest selling single of 2013 in the country.
” Wake Me Up ” spent three weeks at the top and eleven weeks in the Top Ten, in total the song spent sixty-eight weeks on the chart.
