Wake me up before you go go Wham
Song Title: Wake me up before you go go
Date of release: 14th of May 1984
Description: ” Wake me up before you go go” is by Wham, the English pop duo formed by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. The track was written and produced by George Michael.
The song was released on the 14th of May 1984 by record labels Columbia and Epic. It was taken as the duo’s first single from their second Album ” Make it big “.
Wham recorded the single at Sarm West Studios in Notting Hill London, England. Now known as SARM Studios it was built-in a disused church which had been deconsecrated.
George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley went against the standard way of recording by working from a demo, instead George had the song formed perfectly in his head and so they recorded it straight with accompanying live band.
George got the inspiration for the song from a note Andrew had left for his mother to wake him up before she left for work. The note read ” Wake me up up before you go “.
George was waiting for his friend to go out that evening, after seeing the note he said to Andrew that it would make a great lyric, or even used as a title for a song.
Andrew explained that he’d made a mistake when writing the note and had mistakenly written the word UP twice. So added Go-Go for the mistake for it not to seem so obvious. The mistake on the note gave Wham the single that finally helped them to break America.
The accompanying video was directed by Andy Morahan, English commercial, film and music video director. He also directed the video for another Wham song ” Everything she wants “, which was the B-side to the Million selling number two single ” Last Christmas “.
The location for the video was Brixton Academy ( Now O2 Academy ) in South London. the former cinema and theatre has hosted many music acts since becoming a music venue in 1983.
Wham perform ” Wake me up before you go go” in t-shirts with “CHOOSE LIFE” to an audience made up of teenagers. Michael also wears luminous gloves in the video. Later he would complain that advertisers would always use him with luminous gloves when advertising the single for compilation Albums.
” Wake me up before you go go” was to be a commercial success for Wham. In the United States the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number 80 on the 8th of September 1984. It reached Number One 10 weeks later where it spent 3 weeks at the top.
In the United kingdom the song entered the UK chart on the 26th of May 1984 at number 4 and climbed to Number One a week later. It spent 7 weeks in the top ten and a total of 16 weeks on the UK chart.
In the United Kingdom sales of the single reached 790,000 making it the 11th best-selling single of 1984.
