The song was released from Cher’s first Album ” Sticks and Stones ” on the Syco Music, Sony and Epic record labels as the third and last single from the UK version of the Album and as the first single from the US Album.
On the non US version of the song Brian “Astro” Bradley, The X Factor USA contestant is guest vocalist, in the USA a different version was released.
” Want u back ” is composed as a bubblegum pop song with Cher singing about a girl in denial about a boyfriend who has moved on to another girlfriend.
when asked what the song was about, she explained ” It’s basically a track from lots of different girls’ stories out there. A lot of people are telling me they can relate to the track and they’ve been in that situation, but it’s also got an element of fun in it “.
In the US version of the video Cher is in a Californian diner, used before as a location for Cee Lo’s “Forget You” video. There she performs most of the song from the diner’s counter top and shows her attempting to sabotage her ex’s new girlfriend at every opportunity.
The US version of the video has notched up over 100 Million views on YouTube certified by VEVO.
For the International version of the video, Cher is still trying to sabotage her ex boyfriend’s new relationship. This time she is sitting on her bed looking at photo’s of her former love with his new girlfriend, in the photo’s she can be seen trying to break them up.
” Want u back ” went down well with music critics, Allmusic’s Jon O’Brien noted ” an infectious example of cutesy pure pop that recall Britney before she lost her innocence “.
Another critic, Joe Rivers from No Ripcord said of the song ” It’s packed with hooks and has Cher’s personality stamped all over it “.
Along with a good response by music critics, the record buying public also took to the song. In the United States ” Want u back ” entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number 75, from there it climbed to reach a peak at number 12.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK chart and reached a peak position of number 25, the song stayed in the top 40 for 5 weeks and spent a total of 12 weeks on the chart.
