” We Built This City on Sausage Rolls ( We Built This City …on Sausage Rolls ) ” is by LadBaby. The charity novelty single was released on the 14th of December 2018 under the record label frtyfve songs, the publishing arm of the independent music blog, frtyfve.
LadBaby is the United Kingdom blogger, Mark Hoyle, who in addition to his first UK chart-topping single was also crowned Celebrity Dad of the Year earlier in 2018. The song and video feature Roxanne, Mark Hoyle’s wife, who he has been married to since 2015. Roxanne, a former amateur UK free diver, is also a successful blogger and YouTuber going by the name of LadBabyMum.
” We Built This City on Sausage Rolls ” is the first novelty song released to claim the coveted festive Number One since the 2000 single ” Can We Fix It? ” by British children’s animated character Bob the Builder, which was created by Keith Chapman and voiced by Neil Morrissey, the English actor best known for playing Tony in Men Behaving Badly.
The song is LadBaby’s version of ” We Built This City ” by Starship, the US rock group. The original song, released on the 1st of August 1985, topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States for two weeks. In the United Kingdom, it reached a peak of number twelve on the UK Singles chart.
The comedy lyrics for ” We Built This City on Sausage Rolls ” meant that many chart observers and music critics predicted the song would not top the UK Singles Chart. Mark Savage, the BBC Music reporter dismissed the song’s chances of topping the festive chart in the UK telling the BBC Entertainment website that ” Sorry, but LadBaby won’t be Christmas number one. ”
The single is based on the classic English Sausage Roll, a savoury pastry snack, that is not just popular in the United Kingdom but many Commonwealth countries.
The snack is made up of puff pastry which encases sausage meat, then glazed with egg or milk and baked. Although first conceived in France, it was during the Napoleonic Wars that it gained popularity as an English staple. Such is the UK’s love of the meat and pastry parcels that bakery chain Greggs sells around 140 million of the snacks annually in the country.
The nonsense song with the silly lyrics of ” We built this city, we built this city on sausage roll ” beat the likes of Ariana Grande, Ava Max and Mariah Carey to the top spot, with the three contenders finishing on numbers three, two and four respectively.
All the proceeds for the single go to trusselltrust, a UK based charity with a network of 420 food banks that help people that live below the poverty line in the United Kingdom.
” We Built This City on Sausage Rolls ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 27th of December 2018 at Number One. It has not been released outside of the United Kingdom.
