We Can’t Stop Miley Cyrus
Song Title: We Can’t Stop
Artist: Miley Cyrus
Date of release: June 3, 2013
Description: ” We Can’t Stop ” is by Miley Cyrus ( Destiny Hope Cyrus ), the American singer. The song was written by Mike L. Williams II, Pierre Ramon Slaughter, Timothy Thomas, Theron Thomas, Miley Cyrus, Douglas Davis and Ricky Walters.
The R&B pop song was produced by Mike Will Made It, P-Nasty and Rock City, the latter wrote and produced ” Pour It Up ” for Rihanna.
” We can’t stop ” released by the RCA Record label in 2013 as the lead single from Miley’s fourth Album ” Bangerz “.
The song was originally intended for Rihanna; the production duo had her in mind when first writing the track, it was then offered to producer Mike Will Made It, who then gave the song to Miley. The decision was based on the fact that Rihanna was already a successful recording artist after she hit single ” Diamonds ” in 2012.
The team felt the song needed to be someone’s first single, Miley later commented: ” it really just turned out to be perfect and exactly what I wanted, and exactly what I wanted my first sound to be, and my first look to be”.
Lyrically the song is built around a party theme and mentions recreational drugs concerning ” dancing with molly “, the slang for ecstasy and ” trying to get a line in the bathroom ” which is of course reference to cocaine. Miley was asked to explain the confusion caused by whether the lyric was ” dancing with molly ” or ” Miley “.
She set to put the record straight and commented that ” if you’re aged ten it’s ‘Miley’, if you know what I’m talking about then you know. I just wanted it to be played on the radio, and they’ve already had to edit it so much “.
” We Can’t Stop ” received a mixed bag of reviews from music critics. Entertainment Weekly’s Adam Carlson liked the track and commented that lyrically it was questionable but infectious. Another critic Mikael Woods from the Los Angeles Times noted that it was ” the calmest, most clear-eyed rebel yell since Janet Jackson’s Control “, which was released back in 1986.
However not everyone felt the same way, Los Angeles Times critic Randall Roberts wrote that the song seemed like it was written by a ninth-grader.
Despite the mixed reviews by music critics, the song was a commercial success for Miley reaching the Top ten in many countries including Brazil, Austria, Australia and Japan.
In the United States ” We Can’t Stop ” entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number eleven from there the song climbed to reach number two.
The United Kingdom provided Miley with a Number One, here the song spent one week at the top with six weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twenty-five weeks on the chart.
