” We Don’t Talk Anymore ” is by Cliff Richard ( Harry Rodger Webb ), the British pop singer, musician, performer and actor. Cliff was born to British parents in Lucknow, which was at the time part of British India.
He has been a UK resident for most of his life, although he became a citizen of Barbados in 2010. When not on tour, he spends his time in Barbados and Portugal. Cliff has sold over 250 million records worldwide and has sold over 21 million singles in the United Kingdom. He is the third-top-selling artist in the history of the UK Singles Chart, behind the Beatles and Elvis Presley.
The song was written by Alan Tarney, the English songwriter, record producer and bass guitarist. Alan wrote and produced Barbara Dickson’s ” January February ” and Leo Sayer’s ” More Than I Can Say “. He has also written or co-written for John Farnham. As a producer, Alan has worked with A-ha, the Norwegian pop band and The Hollies, Bow Wow Wow, The Dream Academy, Squeeze, Matthew Sweet, Voice of the Beehive and Pulp.
” We Don’t Talk Anymore ” was produced by Bruce Welch, the English guitarist, songwriter, producer and singer, Bruce is most famous for being a member of The Shadows, who had 69 UK chart singles from the 1950s to the 2000s. Of those, 35 were credited to the Shadows and 34 to Cliff Richard and the Shadows. As a producer, Bruce has worked with artists like Roger Whittaker, Olivia Newton-John, Cilla Black and the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver.
The single was released in July 1979 by record label EMI ( Universal Music Group ) and was taken from Cliff’s 1979 Album, Rock ‘n’ Roll Juvenile. The Album also featured Cliff’s number four UK Singles Chart ” Carrie “. The Album reached number ninety-four on the Billboard 200 in the United States and number three on the UK Albums Chart in the United Kingdom.
The song Came just before Cliff’s 39th birthday and before there was an announcement that Cliff was to be awarded an OBE ( Order of the British Empire ) for services to music. “We Don’t Talk Anymore ” was to be Cliff’s comeback single and his most significant seller worldwide.
” We Don’t Talk Anymore ” was the sixth video aired on MTV’s launch day ( 1st of August 1981 ), the first being ” Video Killed the Radio Star ” by The Buggles. MTV is an American cable and satellite television channel owned by Viacom Media Networks; the channel initially only showed music videos, but now hosts reality tv shows in addition to music videos.
The song was a commercial success for Cliff. In the United States, it reached a peak of number seven on the Billboard Hot 100, spending twenty weeks on the chart there. It also reached number six on the Cash Box Top 100 Chart.
In the United Kingdom, ” We Don’t Talk Anymore ” peaked at Number One, a position it held for four weeks. The song spent eight weeks in the Top Ten and a total of fourteen weeks on the UK chart.
The single has sales of over four million worldwide and also charted in Austria, Belgium (Flanders), Finland, West Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Malta, Norway and Switzerland.
