” What About Us ” is by Pink ( Alecia Beth Moore ), the American singer, songwriter, dancer and actress.
In 1995, Pink signed her first record deal with LaFace Records as part of Choice, an R&B girl group. However the label only wanted pink and not the whole group, so she was signed as a solo artist.
Pink’s breakthrough came in 2000 with Can’t Take Me Home, her debut album. Released by LaFace Records in the United States on the 4th of April 2000, it reached a peak of number twenty-six on the Billboard 200 and number twenty-three on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart.
The Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) certified the album 2x Platinum with sales of over 2 million.
During Pink’s career, she has won three Grammys, a Brit Award, a Daytime Emmy Award and seven MTV Video Music Awards, which included the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, which was first presented in 1984 and later in 1991 renamed in honour of Michael Jackson. To date, in the United States Pink has sold over 16 million albums and notched up sales exceeding 47 million records worldwide.
” What About Us ” was written by Pink, Steve Mac ( who also produced the track ) and Johnny McDaid. Steve is a British musician, songwriter and record producer.
In 2013 he received the ASCAP ( The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers ) Songwriter of The Year Award in recognition for his work which included co-writing ” Glad You Came “, a UK Singles Chart Number One and Billboard Hot 100 Chart number three single by the British-Irish boy band, The Wanted.
Steve has worked with many artists during his career including Demi Lovato, Shakira, One Direction, Westlife, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis, The Saturdays, Rita Ora and James Blunt.
Johnny McDaid is a Northern Irish singer, songwriter, musician and record producer from Derry, Northern Ireland’s second-largest city. Johnny played guitar, piano and singing backing vocals in Snow Patrol, the alternative rock band. The band are best known for their single ” Chasing Cars “, which peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and six on the UK Singles Chart.
It also charted in Australia, New Zealand and across Europe. He has worked with many artists as either co-writer or producer including Ed Sheeran, Rudimental, Robbie Williams, James Blunt and Zara Larsson.
” What About Us ” was released on the 10th of August 2017 by record label RCA ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and is taken as the lead single from Pink’s seventh studio album, Beautiful Trauma.
Lyrically the song has been described as an emotional club ballad which has been composed around pounding drums and synthesisers.
The accompanying music video was directed by Georgia Hudson with choreography by the Goldenboyz. Georgia Hudson is a London based Video Director at Agile Films Ltd. She studied at the University of the Arts London, Europe’s largest specialist arts and design university. In addition to directing Pink’s video, Georgina has worked with MØ, Sigma and Ellie Goulding.
” What About Us ” is a commercial success for Pink. In the United States, the song reached number twenty-eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and to date has spent five weeks on the chart there.
It also reached number twelve on the Adult Contemporary, eight on the Adult Top 40, thirty-three on the Dance Club Songs and seventeen on the Mainstream Top 40 charts.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 17th of August 2017 and reached a peak of number three. It spent four weeks in the Top Ten and to date has spent five weeks on the UK chart.
