” What Have I Done To Deserve This? ” is by the Pet Shop Boys, the British electronic pop duo who formed in 1981 in London, England. The song was written by Neil Tennant, Chris Lowe and Allee Willis.
Production for the song was by Stephen Hague. Stephen is an American record producer who has worked with many UK artists including Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark ( OMD ), Public Image Ltd., New Order, Melanie C, Peter Gabriel, Dubstar and Erasure. He also produced Siouxsie and the Banshees most successful US single ” Kiss Them For Me ” in 1991.
” What Have I Done To Deserve This? ” was released on the 10th of August 1987 by record label Parlophone and taken from the Pet Shop Boys second album, Actually.
Co-writer Allee Willis is an American songwriter has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Bob Dylan, Patti LaBelle and James Brown. She also wrote Earth, Wind & Fire’s hit singles ” September ” and ” Boogie Wonderland “. Her songs have sold over 50 million records.
The song features the vocals of Dusty Springfield ( Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien ). Dusty was born on the 16th of April 1939 in West Hampstead, London. She became an icon of the swinging sixties and is best known for her 1963 hit single ” I Only Want To Be With You “.
Chris, Neil and Allee wrote ” What Have I Done To Deserve This? ” in 1985. While writing they couldn’t think of whom to use for the female part of the song. Neil had been a lifelong fan of Dusty Springfield, remembering this it was suggested by their management that they should ask Dusty. The song was initially intended to be included on their debut album, Please. However the attempts to contact Dusty and persuade her to add her vocals to the song in time for the release failed.
Eventually, Dusty was able to team up with Neil and Chris, and so the song was recorded after she flew into the United Kingdom in 1987 to lay down her vocals. The song was added to their second album, Actually.
The accompanying video was directed by Eric Watson. Eric was a former photographer at the British music magazine, Smash Hits, which ran fortnightly between 1978 and 2006. After leaving the magazine in 1986, Eric went into producing pop music videos. He worked with artists including Rod Stewart, Chris Rea and Holly Johnson along with both Dusty Springfield and the Pet Shop Boys.
” What Have I Done To Deserve This? ” was a commercial success for the Pet shop boys. In the United States, the song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100; it spent eighteen weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 22nd August 1987 and reached number two. It spent five weeks in the Top Ten and a total of nine weeks on the UK chart.
The Pet Shop Boys were due to receive the Outstanding Contribution to Music award at the 2009 BRIT Awards when they performed the song with Lady Gaga.
