The song was released on the 13th of January 1986 by record label A&M Records ( Universal Music Group ) and taken as the lead single from Janet’s third album, Control. The album, released on the 4th of February 1986, made its debut at number 102 on the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Black Albums on the 22nd of February that year.
After twenty weeks the album reached Number One on the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Black Albums chart. Janet set a female artist record after selling 250,000 copies in a single week. Since 1991, Control has sold over 6,379,000 copies in the United States after its debut. Worldwide sales are more than ten million copies.
” What Have You Done for Me Lately ” deals with many problems people find in a relationship, mostly from a woman’s point of view. Originally written for one of James Harris III and Terry Lewis’s records, the lyrics were rewritten to reflect Janet’s feelings about her recent divorce from James DeBarge.
The accompanying music video was directed by Brian Jones and Piers Ashworth. Filmed in December 1985, the video also features Rudy Huston as the boyfriend and was choreographed by Paula Abdul, who also appears in the video as Janet’s friend.
” What Have You Done for Me Lately ” was a commercial success for Janet. In the United States, the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number ninety-five and climbed to peak at number four. It spent a total of twenty-one weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, it debuted on the UK Singles Chart at number sixty-seven on the 22nd of March 1986; it went on to reach a peak of number three on the 3rd of May. It spent four weeks in the Top Ten and a total of fourteen weeks on the UK chart.
