” What’s Love Got To Do With It ” is by Tina Turner ( Anna Mae Bullock ), the American-born Swiss recording artist, dancer, actress and author. The song was written by Terry Britten and Graham Lyle.
Terry Britten is an English singer-songwriter and record producer, along with writing for Tina ( and producing this song ), he has written for artists including Cliff Richard, Olivia Newton-John, Status Quo and Michael Jackson.
Graham Lyle is a Scottish singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer. He is probably best known for being part of Gallagher and Lyle, who had a UK number six hit with ” Heart on My Sleeve ” in 1976. Graham has also co-written eighteen UK Top Forty hits and eight Billboard Hot 100 Chart singles.
” What’s Love Got to Do with It ” was released on the 1st of May 1984 in the US by record label Capitol Records ( owned by Universal Music Group ) and taken from Tina’s fifth album, Private Dancer.
The song was offered to many artists before Tina had the chance to record it. First Cliff Richard rejected it; next in line was Phyllis Hyman, she wanted to record it but was stopped from doing so by Clive Davis, the head of Arista Records.
Donna Summer was next in line, she sat on the song for a couple of years but never actually recorded it. Lastly, the British pop group and 1981 Eurovision Song Contest winners Bucks Fizz were offered it. Group member, Jay Aston, asked to sing the lead on the track upon hearing the demo. Her request was rejected by the producer who told her that it was not suitable for a female lead vocal.
When Tina got to hear the demo, she hated it and let her feelings for the track be known. Terry Britten convinced Tina that it was right for her. Tina recalled later the experience of the first play ” He said that when a song is given to an artist, it’s changed for the artist. He said to me he needed to make it a bit rougher, a bit more sharp around the edges. All of a sudden, just sitting there with him in the studio, the song became mine. ”
The accompanying music video was filmed in New York City during the spring of 1984 and was directed by Mark Robinson. It was to be the second, official video for the single. The first video was filmed in black and white and is known as the secret version.
In the video Tina walks down a street in New York City, meeting and interacting with the people she meets along the way.
” What’s Love Got to Do with It ” was a commercial success for Tina. In the United States, the song reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100, staying at the top for three weeks. It spent a total of twenty-eight weeks on the chart there and was to be Tina’s only Number One in the United States.
In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 16th of June 1984 and peaked at number three, which was her highest chart position in the country. It spent seven weeks in the Top Ten and a total of sixteen weeks on the UK chart.
