He was a highly accomplished musician, Prince taught himself the guitar, keyboards, drums and any other type of instrument he could, in fact Prince could play over 27 instruments to a very high standard.
The interview hating superstar took the forename Prince simply because he hated the last of his names, he also used the name symbol in the 1990s. Prince died on the 21st of April 2016 at the age of 57 at his Paisley Park recording studio and home in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
” When Doves Cry ” written, performed and produced by Prince. It was released on the 16th of May 1984 by record label Warner Bros and taken as the lead single from his sixth Album Purple rain.
The Album, released on the 25th of June 1984, has to date sold in excess of 22 Million copies Worldwide, making it the sixth best-selling Album of all time.
Both the Purple Rain Album and the film of the same name feature The Revolution, the group had a multi-racial, multi-gendered line up. It was the first time that Prince’s backing band The Revolution had worked with him on an Album, the band was formed by Prince in 1978 for a tour.
The Revolution is best known as a rock band, however they incorporated rhythm and blues, funk, pop and hard rock into their music.
” When Doves Cry ” was recorded in Los Angeles at Studio 3 in the Sunset sound studios. In an interview with the Musician magazine, engineer Peggy McCreary shed some light on how Prince approached recording, she said ” He doesn’t make records like other people. He doesn’t have any set hours and he doesn’t have any set way of doing things, nothing is normal “.
The song was completed after all the other songs for Purple Rain, along with his vocals all music instruments were played by Prince. The song was inspired by the relationship Prince had with Susan Moonsie, a member of the American female R&B/Funk trio Vanity 6 which Prince had put together in 1981.
It was featured in the film Purple Rain in which Prince made his acting debut playing “The Kid ” to showcase his talent. The film features several extended concert sequences that demonstrate just that.
Notes on the Purple Rain DVD state that Prince was asked by the film’s director Albert Magnoli to write a song for one particular segment, Prince rose to the challenge and next day had written two songs, one song he’d written was ” When Doves Cry “.
The song was a commercial success for Prince. In the United States the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number 57 on the 2nd of June 1984, it took just six weeks to climb to Number One , spending 5 weeks at the top.
It spent 22 weeks on the chart and the song was the Billboard year-end Number One single of 1984. Since Prince passed away on the 21st of April 2016 the song has re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number 20. Prince simultaneously held the number one Album, single and film in the US in 1984. It was the first time an artist had done so in the country.
In the United Kingdom ” When Doves Cry ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 30th of June 1984 and reached a peak of number 4. It spent 6 weeks in the top ten and a total of 16 weeks on the UK chart.
