Description: ” When You Ask About Love ” is by Matchbox, the British Rockabilly band. The band was formed by Iain ” Houndog ” Terry, Fred Poke, Jimmy Redhead and Wiffle Smith in Middlesex, England in 1971.
In 1978 the linue-up changed to include Graham Fenton, Steve Bloomfield, Gordon Scott, Fred Poke and Jimmy Redhead. In Australia the band had to add the word ” Major ” to their because there was an already established Australian band with a similar name.
The big breakthrough for Matchbox came after they were asked to support Bo Diddley and Carl Perkins on a sell-out European tour. The band received rave reviews in the music press at the time which led to them being approached by the record label Magnet, who offered them a recording contract.
Matchbox released their last single called ” I Want Out “, which featured on the band’s Album, Crossed Line. The single was co-produced with the late English singer and songwriter, Kirsty MacColl.
The song was written by Sonny Curtis for the Crickets and recorded in 1959 after the death of Buddy Holly. The song featured on the group’s critically acclaimed and influential rock and roll Album, In Style With the Crickets. Originally released by record label Coral, the song reached a peak of number 27 on the UK Singles Chart, spending 1 week on the chart there.
Sonny is best known for writing ” I Fought the Law “, originally recorded for the Album. Later covered by The Bobby Fuller Four in 1964 and later by Hank Williams Jr and the Clash.
Along with writing memorable songs, Sonny was also the first rock ‘n roll artist to record playing the famous Fender Stratocaster guitar.
Matchbox’s cover of ” When You Ask About Love ” was released in 1980 by record label Magnet ( Warner Bros. Records ) and features on the band’s Album Midnite Dynamos.
The song was a commercial success for Matchbox. In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 27th of September 1980 and reached a peak of number 4. It spent 4 weeks in the top ten and a total of 12 weeks on the UK chart.
