” Wild Thoughts ” is by DJ Khaled ( Khaled Mohamed “DJ” Khaled ) American record producer, radio personality, DJ and record label executive.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, previously went by the name of Arab Attack, but after the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers on the morning of Tuesday the 11th of September 2001, he changed his stage name to DJ Khaled as he felt the name Arab Attack was insensitive to the victims of the atrocity.
DJ Khaled released his debut studio album in 2006, titled Listennn… the Album. It featured a long list of artists which included Young Jeezy, Bun B, Birdman, Juelz Santana, Slim Thug, Krayzie Bone, Chamillionaire, Trina and Twista.
The album debuted and peaked at number twelve on the Billboard 200 in the United States, selling 44,000 copies in the first week of release. In 2009, he became the president of Def Jam South record label, the southern division of Def Jam Recordings and was the founder and CEO of We the Best Music Group.
DJ Khaled has 2x Grammy nominations and 5x MTV Awards nominations. He won the Ozone Award for Best Video and Best Radio DJ in 2007 and 2008 for DJ of the Year. Ozone is an American magazine which focuses on the hip-hop music of the Southern United States. It was founded in 2002 by current editor Julia Beverly in Orlando, Florida and 2006 relocated to Atlanta, Georgia.
” Wild Thoughts ” was written by Jahron Braithwaite, Khaled Khaled, Robyn Fenty, Bryson Tiller, Jerry Duplessis, Wyclef Jean, Tari, Marvin Moore-Hough and Carlos Santana. Production for the single was by DJ Khaled, DJ Nasty and Asahd Khaled.
The song was released on the 6th of June 2017 by record label We the Best ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and taken as the third single from DJ Khaled’s tenth studio album, Grateful.
The album, released on the 23rd of June 2017 by We the Best Music Group and Epic Records features guest appearances from many artists including Future, Travis Scott, Rick Ross, Migos, Chance the Rapper and Nicki Minaj.
Grateful debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 with sales of 149,000 album-equivalent units ( 1 Album = 10 downloads or 1500 song streams ), 50,000 of those were were physical sales. The Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) certified the Album Platinum on the 23rd of August 2017.
” Wild Thoughts ” is a mid-tempo Latin-inspired song with the composition built around Latin percussion and acoustic guitar. The guitar riffs are sampled from ” Maria Maria “, the Santana Billboard Hot 100 Number One single, which stayed at the top for ten weeks.
Featured on the track is Barbadian singer Rihanna, who is one of the best-selling artists of all time with sales of over 230 million records Worldwide. Another artist featured on the song is American singer Bryson Tiller, whose second studio album, True to Self, debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 in the United States.
The accompanying music video was directed by Colin Tilley, the Grammy-nominated American music video director, commercial director and filmmaker. Colin has worked with a variety of artists including Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Skrillex, DJ Snake, Alesso, Enrique Iglesias, Justin Timberlake, 50 Cent, Jason Derulo, Rita Ora and Britney Spears.
The video was filmed on location in the Little Haiti neighbourhood of Miami, Florida. The area is famous for its street life, restaurants, art galleries, dance, music and theatre performances.
” Wild Thoughts ” has been a commercial success for DJ Khaled. In the United States, the song debuted at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, notching up 89,000 digital sales and 36.3 million streams. It went on to peak at number two, kept from the top by ” Despacito ” by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 29th of June 2017 and reached Number One, spending one week at the top. It spent nine weeks in the Top Ten and to date twelve weeks on the UK chart.
