Artist: A Flock of Seagulls
Date of release: 1982
Description: ” Wishing ( If I Had a Photograph of You ) ” is by A Flock of Seagulls, the British new wave group which formed in Liverpool in 1980. The group was formed in Liverpool by Mike Score, a former hairdresser. According to Mike, the group got their name from a 1978 Stranglers song ” Toiler on the Sea ” taken from the Stranglers Album ” Black And White “.
A Flock of Seagulls practised above Mike’s hair salon, where he used a synthesiser he got from a local music shop whose owner allowed him to take it and pay for in instalments. From there they then moved on to play in clubs before landing a recording deal with the Cocteau record label. After a couple of releases with that label, they signed with Jive. In 1983 the group won a Grammy Award Best Rock Instrumental Performance for their Album track ” D.N.A. ” which featured on the Album, A Flock of Seagulls.
” Wishing ( If I Had a Photograph of You ) ” was written by Mike Score, Ali Score, Frank Maudsley and Paul Reynolds. Production for the single was by Mike Howlett.
Mike is a Fijian musician, teacher and a Grammy, Award-winning producer. He is based in the United Kingdom and Australia. In the latter part of the 1980s, Mike produced some hit singles and Albums for the likes of A Flock of Seagulls, The Alarm, China Crisis, Martha & the Muffins, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Stephen Duffy. In 1985 he produced the Album Secret Secrets for Joan Armatrading.
The single was released on the 16th of November 1982 by record label Zomba Records ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and was taken as the opening single and only hit from the group’s second Album, Listen. The Album, released in May 1983, was also produced by Mike Howlett, except for the single ” (It’s Not Me) Talking ” which Bill Nelson produced. The Album reached a peak of number sixteen on both the Billboard 200 Chart and the UK Albums Chart.
The inspiration for the lyrics came when Mike Score was on a date with a lady who produced a photo of herself. He asked her for it, but she refused to give it to him. Mike took the experience and wrote the lyrics for the song. The composition made up of Wall of Sound-style synthesiser padding, according to AllMusic it’s a ” multi-layered, hypnotic song “.
The accompanying music video was directed by Tony van den Ende; the British director has worked with a variety of artists across many genres including Yusuf Islam, Russell Watson, Meat Loaf, Joe Cocker, Symposium, Manic Street Preachers, Texas, All About Eve and Transvision Vamp.
