The song was written by Terence Trent D’Arby and Sean Oliver. Sean was a founding member of Rip Rig + Panic, a post-punk band formed in 1981. The band named themselves after jazz saxophonist Roland Kirk’s 1965 Album. Sean Oliver died in March 1990 from sickle-cell anemia.
The song was produced by Terence Trent D’Arby and Martyn Ware. English producer Martyn Ware was a founding member of 80’s groups the Human League and Heaven 17. As a record producer, Martin helped to revitalise the career of Tina Turner in 1983 with the song ” Let’s stay together “.

The accompanying video Terence is featured in a park in black and white and in colour in the studio. He sits next to a girl on a bench who is reading Le Monde newspaper ( French daily evening newspaper founded by Hubert Beuve-Méry in 1944 ).
The song was a commercial success for Terence. In the United States the song reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, it stayed on the chart for 25 weeks. When ” Wishing well ” made the Number One spot in the US it had charted for 17 weeks, this made it the slowest single to reach Number One since the British new wave music duo Eurythmics single ” “Sweet dreams ( Are made of this ) ” in September 1983.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK chart on the 20th of June 1987 and reached a peak of number 4. It spent 4 weeks in the top ten and a total of 11 weeks on the UK chart.
