Description: ” Words ” is by F.R.David ( Elli Robert Fitoussi ), the Tunisian-born Jewish French singer-songwriter. His career begain with the French garage band Les Trèfles as Robert Fitoussi.
The band produced one E.P., then became Les Boots, however they had very limited commercial success. After going solo in 1967 and adopting a new stage name, F.R.David worked with Michel Colombier on some orchestral pop psych recordings which included a cover of The Beatles’ ” Strawberry Fields Forever ” (Il Est Plus Facile).
In 1974 F.R.David went to America as the singer with French rock band, Les Variations. The band went on a year tour of the US and opened for Aerosmith, they also recorded a rock & roll Album ” Cafe of Paris “.
For the remainder of the 1970s, F.R.David worked with a variety of artists including Michael Kamen, SteelyDan and Toto. It was to be the 1980s when his biggest hit would be released.
” Words ” was produced by Frederic Leibovitz, the French music publisher. Frederic took over direction of Jenner-Music, a Philips records editorial department, after his military service in 1967. One of his first signings was Aphrodite’s Child, which was a Greek progressive rock band. Formed in 1967, two of its founding members, Vangelis and Demis Roussos, went on to have successful solo careers.
The song was originally released by record label Carrere ( defunct ) only in France and Monaco during the winter of 1981, it was released later elsewhere in Europe. Two years later the song was released in America and the United Kingdom. The song was taken from F.R.David’s debut Album of the same name.
The synth-led mid-tempo ballad sold in excess of eight million records worldwide, topping many of the charts in Europe during the latter part of 1982. ” Words ” went on to become the 22nd best-selling single in the United Kingdom during 1983.
Although the song is known to be by F.R.David, the credit for the composition on both the single and LP are Robert Fitoussi, F.R.David’s real name. All later reissues and re-recordings credit Robert Fitoussi and not to F.R.David.
” Words ” was a commercial success for F.R.David. In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 26th of March 1983 and reached a peak of number 2. It spent 6 weeks in the top ten and a total of 13 weeks on the UK chart. The song was also a huge hit throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
