Description: ” Yes Sir, I Can Boogie ” is by Baccara, the female duo formed in 1977 by Spanish artists Mayte Mateos and María Mendiola. The two performers were discovered by the English manager of the German subsidiary of record company RCA, Leon Deane.
He saw them flamenco dancing and singing traditional Spanish songs in front of tourists in the Tres Islas Hotel on the island of Fuerteventura. Leon invited them to Hamburg and introduced them to the Dutch producer and composer Rolf Soja. the duo were named Baccara, after the name of the black rose, a reference to Mayte Mateos and María Mendiola dark Spanish appearance.
The song was written by Frank Dostal and Rolf Soja ( who produced the track ). Frank is a German songwriter and music producer. In the late 1960s, he was a singer with the rock bands Wonderland and The Rattles, the latter of which had success in Germany during the 60s.
Rolf is a German composer, arranger and producer. He has written film music and has taken part in the Eurovision Song Contest twice, in 1978 and 1986. Along with Baccara, Rolf has also worked with a variety of artists including Nana Mouskouri , Mireille Mathieu , Hildegard Knef , Gitte , Waterloo & Robinson , Ireen Sheer , Claude François.
” Yes Sir, I Can Boogie ” was released on the 29th of July 1977 by record label RCA Records ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and taken from the duo’s debut Album Baccara. The Album was first released by record label RCA Victor ( trademarks are used by Sony Music Entertainment and Technicolor ) in West Germany in 1977.
It features the European hit singles ” Yes Sir I Can Boogie ” and ” Sorry, I’m A Lady “. The Album was popular in Finland and was certified 1× Platinum with sales of 115,000. In the United Kingdom the Album peaked at number 26 on the UK Albums Chart, spending 6 weeks on the chart there.
The lyrics for ” Yes Sir, I Can Boogie ” were written with the backing track recorded the night before Mayte Mateos and María Mendiola travelled to Germany to record the single. They recorded two songs, including this song and then straight away travelled back to Spain to record a TV show.
Baccara were the first female duo to reach the top of the UK Singles Charts. They were also the first from Spain to have a Number One in the UK until Julio Iglesias four years later with his song ” Begin The Beguine ( Volver A Empezar ) “.
” Yes Sir, I Can Boogie ” was a commercial success for Baccara. The single was a hit throughout Europe, making Number One in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium and Switzerland. It made number 3 in France.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 17th of September 1977 and reached Number One on the 29th of October that year. It spent 1 week at Number One, 7 weeks in the top ten and a total of 17 weeks on the UK chart. The song was not released in the United States. The single is one of the best-selling of all time, with an estimated total of 18 million in sales Worldwide.
