” Y.M.C.A ” by Village People the American disco group. ” Y.M.C.A ” was the only track to be released as a single from their third album, Cruisin’ in 1978.
The song was a commercial success with a number two on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in the United States. It was kept off the top spot by Rod Stewart, and his song ” Da Ya Think I’m Sexy? “.
However, the song reached the top of the charts in several other countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden and Switzerland.
” Y.M.C.A ” made it onto the list of the biggest sellers of all time with sales of approximately 12 million worldwide, making it by far the group’s biggest seller.
The popularity of the song has never waned, it’s still played in clubs and many sporting events across the US and Europe. ” Y.M.C.A ” can be found on every playlist of wedding DJ’s throughout the world and is guaranteed to be a floor filler.
Even though the now famous dance, the spelling of ” Y.M.C.A ” using arm movements is associated with the song; it wasn’t performed in the video.
The dance moves originated from a TV show in the United States called Dick Clark’s American Bandstand when The Village people performed the song on the show, the audience spelt the title of the song with their arms until then there was no official dance for the song.
” Y.M.C.A ” became a record breaker in 2009 for another reason, 44,000 people danced to the song when The Village people performed the song live at the 2008 Sun Bowl game in El Paso, Texas.
The song stands at number seven on the VH1 20th century’s greatest dance songs chart.
The organisation behind the YMCA threatened legal action over the use of the trademark name, along with the use of double entendres in the lyrics and video. However, they didn’t pursue the claim, and legal action was dropped.
