YMCA The village people
Song Title: YMCA
Artist: The villgae people
Date of release: November 13, 1978
Description: ” YMCA ” by Village People the American disco group, was the only single to be released from their third Album ” Cruisin’ ” in 1978.
The song was a huge commercial success with a number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 Charts, losing out for the top slot to Rod Stewart and his song “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?”.
However the song reached number one slots in several other countries including the UK, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden and Switzerland.
” YMCA ” made it onto the list of the biggest sellers of all time with sales of approximately 12 Million Worldwide, making it by far the group’s biggest seller.
The popularity of the song has never waned and it’s still played in clubs and many sporting events across the US and Europe. ” YMCA ” seems to be on every play list of wedding DJ’s throughout the World and is guaranteed to be a floor filler.
Even though the now famous dance, the spelling of ” YMCA ” using arm movements is associated with the song, it wasn’t actually performed in the video.
The dance moves originated from a tv show in the US called Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, when The Village people performed the song on the show, the audience spelt the title of the song with their arms, until then there was no actual dance for the song.
” YMCA ” became a record breaker in 2009 for another reason, 44,000 people danced to the song when The Village people sung the song live at the 2008 Sun Bowl game in El Paso, Texas.
The song stands at number 7 on the VH1 20th century’s greatest dance songs chart.
The organization behind the YMCA threatened legal action over use of the trademark name and the use of double entendres in the song and video, however they didn’t persue the claim and legal action was dropped.
