” You Make Me Feel Like Dancing ” is by Leo Sayer ( Gerard Hugh Sayer ), the Grammy Award-winning British-born singer-songwriter, musician and entertainer.
Leo was born on the 21st of May 1948 in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex. The seaside town and port date back to before the Roman occupation. During the Norman Conquest of the British Isles, the name was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Soresham.
Leo began his music career working with David Courtney, the British singer-songwriter and record producer. Leo provided lyrics to David’s melodies. Roger Daltrey, lead singer rock band the Who, had a hit with a Leo and David penned the song, ” Giving It All Away “. It reached number five in the United Kingdom in 1973. The same year, Leo began his career as a recording artist.

His debut solo studio album, Silverbird, released in the United Kingdom in January 1974 by record label Chrysalis and in the United States by Warner Bros., was co-produced by Adam Faith and David Courtney. The album reached a peak of number two on the UK Albums Chart in 1974, spending twenty-two weeks on the chart. In the United States, it reached number 209 on the Billboard Pop Albums Chart.
Leo, in addition to his catchy songs, is also known for wearing make-up and costumes resembling a sad clown, known as the Pierrot. His wife at the time, Janice made the costumes and applied his make up. In 2009, he became an Australian citizen and continued to tour.
The song was written by Vini Poncia and Leo Sayer. Vini is an American musician, songwriter and record producer. In the 1970s, Vini became a songwriting partner with Ringo Starr, gaining credits on several of his solo Albums. He has written songs for Jackie DeShannon, Martha Reeves, Tommy James and Kiss. As a producer, he has worked with Tycoon, Adrenalin and Kiss, who he produced their 1980’s album Unmasked.

The album, released in November 1976, received critical acclaim. The album charted in Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands and New Zealand. In the United Kingdom it reached number four on the UK Albums Chart, and in the United States, it peaked at number ten. Endless Flight contains Leo’s first UK chart single and second US chart-topper, ” When I Need You “.
There was controversy surrounding ” You Make Me Feel Like Dancing “, when on the 13th of February 2012, Unsung, a music documentary program that air on American digital cable and satellite television network, TV One, broadcast an episode on Ray Parker Jr.
The show claimed he originally wrote the song and not Vini Poncia and Leo Sayer. It was alleged that Ray Parker Jr. was playing the song on the piano, when an executive from Capitol Records heard it being played, convincing him to make a demo tape recording. However, Ray Parker Jr. couldn’t claim copyright infringement because he failed to make the demo tape.
” You Make Me Feel Like Dancing ” was a commercial success for Leo. In the United States, the song reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100, spending one week at the top and twenty-one weeks on the chart there. It also reached number nineteen on the Adult Contemporary Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 30th of October 1976 and reached a peak of number two. It spent six weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twelve weeks on the UK chart.
