Located along the Canoochee River, Fort Stewart military base is home to nearly 5,000 people and covers 280,000 acres ( 1,100 km2 ).
Khalid’s mother, Linda, is in the military and so he spent much of his childhood in different locations from Fort Campbell in the state of Kentucky to Heidelberg in Germany, where he spent six years. Khalid moved back to the United States settling in El Paso, Texas, the one time home of Fleetwood Mac singer, Stevie Nicks.
It was at this point that Khalid started writing songs. In an interview in February 2017 with Rolling Stone magazine Khalid explained ” It’s just vulnerability, literally throwing it all out on the table ” adding ” This is what I went through during high school: heartbreak, love, all the clichés – but not necessarily in cliché format. ”
The song was written by Khalid Robinson, Joel Little ( who produced this track ) and Talay Riley. Joel is a New Zealand record producer, musician and award-winning songwriter. Born on the 13th of February 1983 in New Zealand, he is now based in Los Angeles. Joel started his career as singer and guitarist with Goodnight Nurse, which was a New Zealand pop punk band that formed in 2001 in Auckland, a city in New Zealand’s North Island. The band released two studio Albums before taking an indefinite break in 2010. Joel has worked with a variety of artists as songwriter or producer; these include Kids of 88, Lorde, Sam Smith and Ellie Goulding.
Talay Riley is a British singer-songwriter. Born on the 10th of July 1990, he is of Nigerian heritage. Talay’s earliest recollection of when he began singing is when he was just four years old; he would often sing into the mirror while listening to Mc Hammer CDs owned by his elder brother and sister. Talay lists Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Beyoncé and James Brown as artists that inspire him the most. As a performer, he has toured with many US and UK artists like N-Dubz, Chipmunk, Skepta and Usher. Talay has worked as a songwriter for many artists including Chipmunk, Ellie Goulding, Iggy Azalea, Jess Glynne, Chris Brown and Britney Spears.
” Young Dumb & Broke ” was released on the 2nd of February 2017 by record labels Right Hand Music Group and RCA ( Sony Music Entertainment ). The song was taken as the second single from Khalid’s debut studio Album, American Teen.
The Album, released on the 3rd of March 2017, debuted on the US Billboard 200 Chart at number nine with sales of 37,000 Album-equivalent units. Pure Album sales made up 12,000 of that figure.
In August 2017, American Teen reached a peak of number four, slipping down to number twelve after spending thirty-three weeks on the chart there. On the 24th of October 2017, the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) certified the Album Platinum.
Lyrically the song, a ballad fusing the sound of an organ with hip-hop beats, is about the protagonist attempting to convince a love interest that there’s nothing wrong with being young and dumb.
The accompanying music video was directed by Calmatic, the LA-based director. He has worked with a range of recording artists including Zayn Malik, Karriem Riggins, Anderson.Paak, Black Hippy and Kendrick Lamar.
The video features appearances from VanJess, Demetrius Harmon, Nathan Zed, Zolee Griggs, Salem Mitchell, Widney Bazile, Quiñ, Will Peltz, Buddy, Normani Kordei, Kel Mitchell. Also appearing are Wayne Brady, Rachael Leigh Cook and Dennis Haskins, best known for playing principal Richard Belding in Saved by the Bell, the American teen sitcom.
” Young Dumb & Broke ” has been a commercial success for Khalid. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number twenty-two on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, spending twenty-two weeks on the chart there.
It also reached number eight on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart, twenty-two on the Mainstream Top 40 and four on the Rhythmic Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 7th of September 2017 and reached a peak of number seventeen. It spent seven weeks in the Top Twenty and to date has spent seventeen weeks on the UK chart.
